Terry Richardson - thoughts?
Shot By Adam wrote: Andrew Attah wrote: He has a very long history of getting naked on the set, playing with himself on the set, etc., etc., etc. As a photographer who do you try to impress? Other photographers or your clients? Personally didn't start making money in this until I realized that my clients are who I need to impress as opposed to "decent photographers". There is no universally accepted standard of "professional work". Sure some "rules" exist but they only exist until someone breaks them and is accepted because of it. Why try and shoot like Adam when I can shoot like Erick? This is art. Everything you mentioned as a knock to him you can see all over the place. EVERY photographers work has "flaws" because everyone has differing opinions. Terry has learned and demonstrated that a happy paying client is far more important than a happy non paying "community". May 16 12 04:10 am Link Well. There are many allegations flying around but not much other than first hand, one-sided alleged conduct or "my mate was once on a shoot with Terry, and..." kind of stuff, but nothing in the way of solid evidence/a conviction. Either he's hated by a few disgruntled models or he's the teflon photographer. If a model sucks some guy's cock because she "felt pressurised into it", well that's her problem - she should have more self respect and quite frankly needs to aim higher in life; there are plenty of other professions she could pursue if she ruins her modelling career by saying "no" to sucking Terry's dick. Also, the Suicide Girls party story... Correct me if I'm wrong but Suicide Girls is a porn site, no? So at what point did she think going into "the back room" of a Suicide Girls party was going to feature anything but lewd behaviour? It wasn't going to a bunch of gents in top hats smoking pipes, swilling brandy and discussing cheese. I'm not saying what Richardson does in some of his work isn't seedy - some of it is not to my liking, but what I'm saying is that there are two sides to every story, sucking a guy's cock requires *you* to put *your* lips around *his* cock and... A party at a porn site will likely feature porn. On the subject of his work... Nobody has yet put forward a convincing argument that his work is no good; it's technically spot on, it has such incredible energy, it's contemporary, it's immediate, there's an amazing connection between him and the people he shoots etc etc. His shots of Rihanna for Supreme are fantastic (Matt Irwin's images of her for Esquire UK are close to as good, though). If you took his name off a lot of his images and post them in the critique section then yes, his work would get "ripped to shreds" because most people here don't like him. Chris Heads is a similar photographer and when I saw his work, I was instantly drawn to it, much the same as I am Terry's - because it's bloody brilliant. Jun 06 12 01:31 pm Link Jerk all the way. Jun 06 12 01:33 pm Link Quite on topic: http://www.thisisplymouth.co.uk/Celebri … story.html This guy used to have a profile here and shot for a few magazines I shoot for. I literally just found out after trying look up his work as a photographer whose work I really liked. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1dnqKGuezo Jun 06 12 01:35 pm Link Terry Richardson is the photography equivalent of Kim Kardashian for me. I don't appreciate it, but I acknowledge his success. Maybe I'm just too old. Maybe MM has a "no unsolicited critique" for a reason? Beauty is in the eyes of him who has the deepest pockets. Jun 15 12 12:27 pm Link Is this the same guy who shot pics of Jared Leto and 30 Seconds to Mars?? If so, this guy is the most talented man in the world! I want to work with him!! Jun 15 12 12:34 pm Link Taryn Sarvas wrote: Yep that's him. Anyone who get's to shoot the beautiful face of Jared Leto on a regular basis is damn lucky in my opinion.. they're close friends apparently. Jun 15 12 01:39 pm Link He is a pig. A pig that has talent when it comes to making photographs. Is that the full measure of a person? How good they are at their job? And when I say he is a pig, I'm just agreeing with him as he is said it himself in interviews. He doesn't make excuses for being who he is. That's OK, but it still leaves him being a self-proclaimed pig with a camera. Jun 15 12 02:10 pm Link Mediocre photographers have strong opinions on Terry Richardson. Jun 15 12 04:05 pm Link Chris Hayden wrote: Is that your opinion? Jun 15 12 04:30 pm Link Some of Terry's recent work below. He can take photos as well as most imo, and this set is a good example of that. Don't understand the pedantry regarding his technical skill. You might not like his style, but he can shoot. http://www.gq.com/women/photos/201207/k … -july-2012 Jun 19 12 04:34 pm Link He uses the hype, some believe it, he makes money, he takes pictures. Is he the best the jury will be out on that for the next 20 years, personally his fathers work was better. The end. Jun 19 12 04:46 pm Link I don't think he's the best, but he's certainly not lacking photographic skill & talent. Jun 19 12 05:07 pm Link No one is "the best" photographer. There's room in the world for more than one style. Vogue isn't the only magazine on the planet. He's found his groove. Good for him. Hope you all do the same. Jun 19 12 08:41 pm Link Where's the guy with the beating a dead horse GIF when you need him?? Jun 19 12 08:49 pm Link i like his Style ,it has great energy and the guy might be a clown.but im glad hes doing great at his age Jun 19 12 08:54 pm Link I've never met the man, until I do I can't really form a valid opinion of him. Some of his work I like, some of it I don't like so much. Whats it really matter, opinions are like assholes, we all have one Jun 19 12 08:57 pm Link Mike Stewart 247 Foto wrote: The lack of specular highlights on these is truly amazing for a PnS, if that's what it was. If not it's still uncommon results for head-on lighting. Jun 19 12 09:34 pm Link Andrew Attah wrote: this is one of my favorite posts, I love your sense of humor! Jul 17 12 12:30 pm Link I'm not going to write another word about Terry Richardson till he sends me a check (!) -- I've spent way too much time reading and writing about him in the last month... Jul 17 12 12:39 pm Link Andrew Attah wrote: I don't follow your opening question. Jul 17 12 01:00 pm Link My opinion is that Terry must be on heck of a personality to be around. A while back I read what was supposed to be an interview with him, but turned out to be as much about the experience of meeting Terry as Terry himself. From hundreds of miles away, and only seeing a part of his work, I'd say his most refined talent is making anyone, even the president of the United States glow with a sort of 70's porn sheen and energy. He definitely follows the "rule" that if you want to take better pictures, stand in front of more interesting stuff. I think he has a technique that, while it may not be difficult, produces interesting results. He applies this technique to already interesting subjects and we're mesmerized. The other truly admirable aspect of Terry as an artist is the volume of his work. One thing I've started to aspire to, to a certain degree is the amount of work artists that I admire produce, and Terry is very busy doing what he does. Another is Ed Templeton or Scott Church. These guys churn out copious amounts of stuff that's fun to look at and that impresses me. Jul 17 12 01:06 pm Link Photoholic wrote: yup. Jul 18 12 12:02 pm Link George Ruge wrote: Jul 18 12 12:07 pm Link It would be a positive development for this site if people would just quit obsessing about a person with an active sex life, and an enviable client base. There are far more constructive topics, and far greater talents than Richardson. Jul 18 12 12:12 pm Link I think that given enough high profile work and resources, any decent photographer could do the best of what he does and many of us would never produce his worst. I call his style "bad photography" and at his best I think he just comes off as an unimaginative and simplistic David Lachapelle wanna be. Jul 18 12 01:58 pm Link Robert Jewett wrote: + (the national debt) Jul 23 12 04:08 pm Link If you take the long view, any negative criticism of T*Rich (especially by MM forum "professionals") boils down to "I wish I was paid $100k for MY terrible on-board flash photos." Everyone fixates on his "bad" personal photography, but I guarantee that you've seen his professional, super clean work and not even realized it. Or you have, and retroactively decided that it's terrible by association. Dude can use a cell phone camera better than you can use a Hasselblad, and that upsets you. You bought a $5k Leica, and T*Rich's POLAROIDS get published in Vogue, and that makes you SO MAD! You can't separate the personality from the photographer. It's like I can only remember the one time I hit a home run in little league, and now I'm very upset that Jeter hit a dribbler and was thrown out at first one time, and he gets paid $20 million per game. He's in a completely different stratosphere. Jul 23 12 11:41 pm Link Chris Hayden wrote: Pot calling the kettle black much? Look at your "photography." Jesus.
