So this thread is inspired by all of the profiles I've come across lately that say "Paid Assignments Only"

I'll give you my honest opinion about how much and if you should be paid.

*Some people I will even suggest pay others to help them, that doesn't necessarily mean that you're bad, just that you need to work with a higher level of photographers or models, and that you may need to pay them to accomplish it.

*Also, in my opinion, no one but celebrities and supermodels should ever limit themselves to only paid assignments. EVERYONE else should be at least open to hearing trade offers from their peers. Even the perfect portfolio needs updated!

Hmmm...  I'm always open to trade ideas, but if I was to be paid, what do you think?

Interesting idea. Many of my models have pretty high expectations of their own value. Some photographers have mentioned to me that I mgiht be over paying some of them.

I've been a Photographer for over 30 years, and a Photographer should never have to pay a model, it should be the other way around every time or an agency paying the photographer. Most models should be happy to pose for a good or great photographer who can add value to their portfolio. Even an inexperienced photographer has something to offer, and the model can help to teach the young photographer.

I generally will lower my pricing to help the model, but if I am approached with attitude of high expectations from the model who is like I have read though comments concerning this topic a "Super model or Fashion model", I'll charge then full pricing to add my work to their portfolio.

I would say you're in the entry level pro range, around $50/hr. Higher for adult oriented work.

You're not ready to get paid work yet (except for adult oriented modeling, I think models should be paid for ALL adult work, this includes suggestive glamour). I would suggest doing some trade shoots to diversify your portfolio.

agreed, my personal rule is that I don't pay the model unless I'm getting paid. If a client hires me to do a shoot and then I hire the model, I pay her. But that's the only scenario in which I pay models.

All of the work in your portfolio is fine art photography, which is most often made just to be art and not for commercial purposes. Most fine artists don't get paid to make their work and thereby won't be able to pay a model. I would suggest doing trade shoots to build a more commercial portfolio for a younger model.  Don't get me wrong, fine art is beautiful, it just doesn't usually make a whole lot of money.

I absolutely agree about the utter hubris of the "No TFP" attitude.

I'm not there and not one of them lol

so - rate away smile
