I had a critique thread months ago, which was a lot of fun, but I simply didn't have the time to continue with it. You can check out the 10 pages of posts here: https://www.modelmayhem.com/po.php?thre … 573&page=1

Here's the drill:
I'm going to be honest.
If I think something is crap. I'll call it crap.
If it's awesome, I will say it's awesome.
I will always do my best to figure out something that I like.
There's a very good chance I'll use a heavy dose of sarcasm.
If you think you might get upset, check out the previous thread (linked above) to see what sort of critiques I do before posting.

Now, who is interested?

Unfortunately, it's not of the right reasons. Sure, the composition is interesting, but the photo quality makes it look like it was shot with a point 'n' shoot. The color feels off and not deliberately so.

This is incredibly heavy handed on the retouching:
https://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/130325/18/5150ffa95cf10.jpg
But it was a great photo to start. Your expression and pose are both fantastic. But the editing make it look like you have crater-sized pores. I guess they did well not going the opposite direction and completely blurring your face, but it does look weird.

For reasons I can't fully figure out, I like this:
https://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/121119/23/50ab378f93f85.jpg
I think it's a combination of your pose and wardrobe and the nice rim lighting that helps define your muscles.

This could be interesting if you were in focus:
https://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/121031/15/5091a49a523a3.jpg

The good news is that the problems I found were more about who you were with rather than anything blatant that you did wrong. There is hope yet! big_smile

One of the most common themes I come across in critique threads is to avoid very similar photos in you portfolio.

You have these two:
https://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/121209/04/50c48482774d4.jpg
https://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/121209/04/50c484cead13d.jpg
Exact same pose and expression, but just looking off to the left versus the right. You can do better.

She is gorgeous...
https://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/121209/04/50c4835554e8c.jpg
But that watermark is obnoxious. Thank you for changing it for you other photos.

This is interesting...
https://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/120805/12/501ec5e0c489c.jpg
but it's really awkward. The model doesn't look engaged at all. It looks like she is in this pose and thinking "WTF am I doing?" I've also come to realize that I really just don't care for using gold reflectors. It looks weird 99% of the time.

This is awesome. The guy in the back is kinda creepy, but all in all, it's a very well done artistic image. Feels like something out of Sin City.

This really doesn't work for me. It's cool that she has a parrot, but there's no personality to it. It could as well a stuffed animal.

Eh....
https://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/130325/15/5150d2d6b4fef.jpg
Pattern is ok, but that's a super bright pattern that takes attention away from the bird. When you're shooting with a parrot, it's all about the parrot.

I like this the best out of your port:

Gorgeous colors. I just wish i could figure out why the beach itself looks desaturated.

If your tagline is going to be "creative portraiture," I want to see something really unique and interesting. What I see is rather traditional.

https://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/130319/23/51495ae2bfd18.jpg
There was no reason to take this horizontally. Sure, I get to see more bokeh, but I would have loved to see more of her.

You have the exact same photo twice in you port, but cropped and edited two different ways.

Use this one:
https://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/130319/23/514959b06a07f.jpg
But edit it like the other one.

This is my favorite:
https://www.modelmayhem.com/portfolio/pic/32051998
But next time, drop down a little bit so that you're photographing her eye to eye. Here, you're looking down on her which screws up how things look.

It reminds me that I want to start photographing some more artsy stuff. Your pose is perfect for the mood of the photo.

This just doesn't do a lot for me. Other than make me question "Why is her crotch towards the camera?" I get the confidence, but I think there are other ways of getting around that.

This lighting is awesome:
https://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/120516/22/4fb487539acc0.jpg
And your expression is fierce. Nicely done.

Thank you for coming back. You may or may not remember that you were the first one for me to critique on my last thread. Your work has changed a lot since then. I'm curious to see where you go from here.

There's really just not a lot of life to it. She's pretty, but where is the soul?

I really really really want to like this:
https://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/121001/14/506a11106d4b8.jpg
But there's just so of that red and white thing that it's distracting from the awesome model and fantastic lighting. Not your fault, just unfortunate.

Truly gorgeous:

The one thing that gets me is that here eyes are super dark here. Almost makes it a little creepy.

I think I would like it even better without the crazy eye tassel things, but it's posed well, photographed well, lit well, and you are all styled well. It's all very well.

Love this location:

This is really playful and artistic and awesome:

I was a concert photographer for the Denver Post for four years before I ever tried to take a photo of a model. Model photography, for me, started in November of 2011.

I see what you were going for with this...
https://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/130324/11/514f48c1eb61c.jpg
...but I don't think it really worked. She looks uncomfortable and maybe even a little angry. He looks like he's going "rawwwrrr bear hug!" It doesn't help that his face is smashed into the side of her head. It's all just terribly stiff and awkward. Maternity shoots should be about love and life and that shouldn't stress people out. You did fine with the technical side, but the subject is sometimes more important than the art of the photo. And.....that watermark is ridiculously big and clunky.

Look at her arm:
https://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/130307/11/5138ef5da651f.jpg
Really look at it. Notice something? It looks like a wonky little baby arm because of how it is arranged in relation to the camera. Don't let a model do that.

This is my favorite of what you currently have:
https://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/130307/11/5138e731d5bed.jpg
The lighting is subdued and makes sense, but I have to question why you didn't drop down a bit so that you weren't shooting down your model, but instead at the same height. That would help make your model look taller.

OK, I can understand having an interest in knives, but I don't really feel like you have taken much of your work from the glamour side of photography with "hot chick with a sword." That appeals to some people, but you're a better photographer than that.

This is my favorite in your portfolio:
18+ https://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/1 … ed5d78.jpg
I just wish her expression didn't make her look so lost. But, it's the most artistic in my opinion because the weapon is serving a thematic purpose. The archer is a very strong symbol. I feel like this is ultimately the direction your work needs to go. It needs to move beyond the "hot chick and a sword," into the realm of the symbol.

Good luck.

I still absolutely adore this image:

I listed it a while ago, and every time I see it, I feel reaffirmed that I like it. It's artistic and weird, and all around awesome.

This is probably the only photo I don't like in your portfolio:
https://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/110615/14/4df921758458c.jpg
Your nose has almost completely disappeared into your face. Your eyes look awesome, but a complete face is hard to beat.

You are definitely one of those people that I would love to work with one day.

The composition and your form are fantastic. But the fact that this is a "fashion" shot and I can barely see the fashion because it's so dark seems silly.

I can't stand the obnoxious frame around the photos, but that's not your fault:

I understand, and support putting models in situations that seem a bit unordinary, but she's in a beach bikini on a rooftop. It's a little too out of place for me.

This is underexposed:
https://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/120803/20/501c9c1ab5c50.jpg
If it was on purpose, let there be a strong reason. If it wasn't don't post it.

I realize that the biggest problem I see in your portfolio is the lighting. The camera work is fine, but almost all of your photos seem underexposed or just poorly lit.

I want to like this one:
https://photos.modelmayhem.com/photos/121211/22/50c820cc54545.jpg
But I just don't.... That little bit of rim lighting on her shoulder isn't enough to make her pop from the dark background. She gets lost in it.

This looks like it was shot with an on-camera flash...
