Anyone interested in designing/developing a publication called 'The MM way of Lighting'?  I understand there's no one 'way' but a catchy title gets attention. I've worked on six previous books. I have four titles on Amazon (not photography, though--published by McGraw-Hill & Prentice-Hall. Anyone interested in this idea, send feedback. I have a publisher in mind (not 'self-publishing). BTW, my avatar done with indirect sun + diffused built in flash on camera.

This topic is too important to be on page 11, so bump.

While I'm at it, I might as well say that I'd like to see more bodyscapes in this thread. I know that photographers often refer to the lighting placement as too easy or free flowing, but power/camera settings would be good to know too.

Its too bad this thread isn't pinned.  Has to be the most asked question on this site, aside from what should I buy next.

It was 30 degrees and cloudy that day. Sick of the dreary cold weather, so I decided to fake some golden hour sun smile

ok guys, im not new here, but its my first post so please dont kill me to fast smile

i follow the thread almost from the begining and useing your advices at work in studio. Many times i have problem with my internet conneciton at studio so i cant cheack this thread for some schematics and so on. So yesterday i make myself a PDF wiht i think the best examples from this thread.

After that i thought that it would be nice to share that with you as a compendium of the thread, of corse only for private purpose. I hope that i hadn't broke any right makeing that PDF book.

If anyone of you want me to delete that file from my server i will do that.

here is the file: www.studio-colorbox.pl/data/projekty/st … vanced.pdf

Piotr has approached me via CAM with regards any potential copyright issues that may arise from his creating this PDF of the lighting examples illustrated in this thread.

Unfortunately, we are not in a position to offer such advice as it's down to the individual contributors to decide if they want their contribution used in such a manner.

That said, I personally believe this has been done in the same spirit of sharing, as the original contributions were made and I hope the rest see it the same way.

Thanks

Piotr, thanks for taking the time to compile this and sharing it here, I appreciate the effort you have put into doing so, as I am sure many others will.

I used two softboxes, one of them close enough to become my background with the nice soft light wrapping around her skin. I used a ringflash off the top right.

The result smile

After years of using different lights (even the old Photogenics w power supplys) - I have settled into my favorite lighting.... By hanging a background next to a "sliding deck door" - you get a full 7 feet of soft daylight coming in.  The vertical blinds can be used as a "control" - and last but not least; I use a large white reflector on the opposite side of the model.  The movement of the reflector can fine-tune your ratio of main-to-fill ..... I love it.  A few assumptions = daylight window, not direct sunlight, a fast lens or a higher e.i. - its not as bright as an 800ws strobe. I do find that if I have a dark background w a dark-haired model, some type of hair light is needed.  It isnt perfect, but for 80% of portraits, its beautiful.  Simplicity.

Also: thank you, Piotr! That PDF is going to come in very handy here in my studio. And thanks to all you clever and generous photographers who have shared your amazing tips. I have a very long way to go to get to where many of you are and I really appreciate your insight into such an important aspect of our craft. Happy holidays, everyone.
