So I see this beautiful girl with a profile full of pictures taken on her camera phone. I message her because hey, I'm always up for getting people to expand my portfolio and always willing to help someone get started. So I ask if she wants to shoot.

I get this reply:

"hey, thanks for the offer, i sincerely appreciate it.
but to be honest, i absolutely hate having my photo taken! so i'm really not interested at this time.
but i will keep your offer in mind, in case i ever decide otherwise."

I'm not ticked at all, she was honest, but why be on MM if thats the case??
I guess I know why she only has camera phone pictures now!

Anyone else ever have this happen? I don't get it.

I have heard people say they don't like it, are nervous, etc.  But after about 10 minutes or otherwise after the shoot when they see the images they tend to relax about it a little.  Some of even asked for another shoot.

My questions is WTF are you doing emailing "models" will cell phone pics to begin with. That is part of the problem. Your just feeding fire and its never gonna get better unless we stop.

Maybe because she really is pretty and he wanted to add something to his port w/o paying someone and possibly help a pretty girl who only has camera shots get some quality pics to add to her port?????

well, at least she's honest about the fact that she doesn't actually intend to follow through with a shoot.

Yeah, she probably just wants "you're pretty" comments.  very silly.

Bonus points for honesty.  I wish all people who dropped off the face of the earth in the middle of an e-mail conversation were that honest.

"Sorry, I just got a cell phone with a self-timer and don't need your services anymore."

"Sorry, I've developed a contagious rash that turns your skin green, like The Hulk."

"Sorry, I think you smell."

Points lost, however, for sheer incomprehensible inanity.

Like everyone else said, some people have to start somewhere! A person with common sense would think since shes's on the site as a MODEL she's looking to get ahead and network with photographers to excel.

I have had many models like that, and they have received many great pictures to start off their port. Now they are off doing their thing. smile

I suppose it's possible that she wants to be an artist's model and would rather pose for paintings or drawings.

We are actually trying to weed those out during the approval process now.  Not saying we're 100% successful, but there is honest effort at it.

Its simple, really.  She.. and SO many others on MM, are using this place as nothing more than an extension of their MySpace existence.

i would use a real simple hypothesis on this interesting situation.  She is what we call "Dipshiticus Gigantis"   or she suffers from "daddydoesntlovemeenough" syndrome.....

Either, ignore her.

I think there are more than one like this.  I am suprised by the number of models that have the cell phone pictures up, they have been on for 6 months or more.  They have tags from a lot of good photographers that want to shoot with them and they may haven have done a casting call but never realy shoot and niver put up new pics.  Look around.

Not sure what their reason is for being on MM

Many girls want their friends, new boyfriend etc, to THINK they are a model, so they put up a profile on the likes of, Purestorm, One Model Place, Net-nodel, etc. They can then point their friends towards these sites, saying, "Look, I'm a model," and some of their friends even believe it.

Unfortunately, they know that real modelling is hard work, and being lazy bitches, they are happy for people to think of them as a model rather than do the work.

List of qualifications to be a photographic model:

1. You have to enjoy having your picture taken; and
2. You have to have the right look: and
3. You have to enjoy having your picture taken; and
4. You have to be available and responsible; and
5. You have to enjoy having your picture taken; and
6. When in doubt, see numbers, one three and five!

at first i thought you were talking about myspace and i understood, but once i realize that the profile was on model mayhem, i was a bit surprised. to some, mm is just another free forum to display their images (and photography).

No offense but it they want to start somewhere they should start by PAYING a photographer to get them images which in turn will get them work. Unless you just have so much money that 30-40K in gear, education, training, studio space, comuters, programs etc etc is a drop in the bucket to you.  If thats the case then god bless you.  This is how I...and alot of other photogs eat.

yes...its always about the "pretty girl with bad pictures" isnt it...wow...this kills me.  Now I know I know..everyone has to stat somewhere. I realize this, but there is the point of where do you start.  The very first day I shot a model was at a glamour seminar in Tampa that I PAID to go to have photographers help me and instruct me what to do and why.  My pictures from day one were never crappy shots.  I dont mean to sound arrogant, I just mean to illustrate a point.

I'm noticing that on sites like DeviantArt now too; I know there's not really an answer to "what is art?", but I'm pretty sure it's not scores of shelf-shot photos in the "Myspace Pose", interspersed with snaps of you and your mates at a nightclub, captioned "I was so drunk here! LOL!".
