i've been shooting natural light and studio, and the next set of equipment i'm looking to buy will probably be a location lighting package.  any suggestions for what the best set of location lighting equipment might be?

I used to love my Elinchrom Ranger w/"A" head & ringflash (the kit is for sale - PM me for details). It required repair once too many times so I jumped over to Profoto 7B and then added a B2. It's really expensive but bullet proof build quality and the light is really amazing. I'd suggest renting it before buying. Just to see if it's your cup of tea.  Less money,...Quantum, Lumendyne, Norman 200/400...

eBay and B&H are great resources for your research.

For portable light only meant as a fill or accent, it's hard to beat the Dynalite and Lumadyne batter powered systems.  You'll get recycle times like you'd expect from a battery system, but it's good quality and extremely light.

I thought about the Profoto 600b, but it's alot of $ for only one head. I got a Tronix Explorer 1200ws battery. It will power my Profoto 600 (3 heads) and a Profoto 1200 pack, not the fastest recycle time. Also works with my Speedotron Blackline. See my test results

Now my Vagabond and alien Bee are my back-up.

Have you tried the Vagabond with your Speedos? If so, how'd that go? And is that a first gen Vagbond?

Thanks smile

First gen Vagabond, I never tried it with my Speedos, tried it with the Profoto and it was like a strobe light and won't stop flashing ...........

I highly recommend a Lumedyne kit, it's what I mostly use on location for portable lights.

I bought a couple of the new Speedotron Explorer 1500 Digital Packs...Wow...put your 7b's away...super long life, adjustable in 1/10 over 5 stops, around $1700 bucks, which is about half a pro-foto.

Hello,

Something else to think about is flash duration.  If there will be a lot of movement with the model then you may need something with a fast flash duration.  I am not an expert on all of the companies, so I will let those pros tell you about that.  But, I do use Profoto because they do have a super fast flash duration.

I like Mole, but Arri's cooler looking. Get at least 10 tons, with a truck-mounted generator.

Just a few months ago I bought two of the 600.  They are great and so amazingly light.  I travel alot for my work and was hauling around the 1200 7B. They are great too but too heavy..  When I first began shooting on location I tended to overestimate the light I would need--2400pro paks/generator.  Usually I got by with shooting at between 8 and 5.6 so I realized I didn't need that power on location(yes for studio, though).  When I got the two 600 I also bought the acute 2400.  So basically now I can get into almost any situation and am pretty set for lighting since I have 5 heads to work with for lighting.  I recently dragged it all out to SF for a job and in the end had a location with amazing daylight and never once used the lights.  But because they were  so easy to move around it didn't bother me too much.  But not right for everyone's budget.
