It's been suggested that I should add a few(beauty shots) to my portfolio, but I'm not quite sure what they are versus headshots or glamed up images. I have, thus far, had to do my own make-up, hair and wardrobing....so I'm needing some help. If anyone could post some examples or tell me roughly what the look (wardrobe, make-up and hair) is it would be great help. I'm planning a couple shoots shortly and would like to add this style image onto the initerary.

Thank You So much!

There is no "real" definition.
something like this...

Definitions will vary, but I believe that all but one or two of these are "beauty shots":

Clean, Simple-Looking Lighting.

Really Good Make-Up. A type that is rather difficult to do on your own.
The make-up should really emphasize your eyes and lips, while taking out any imperfections in your skin.

The goal of a beauty-shot is to, quite simply, look beautiful. Create a fantasy.

I tend to define them as closeups of the face that may or may not include creative makeup. I do always like to see tight clean beauty shots in every model and makeup artists portfolio.

I should add that if I don't see clean beauty shots in a model or makeup artist's portfolio, I feel like they're hiding something. :-)

Maybe not creative/extreme make-up...but still REALLY GOOD makeup. No comment on a model as her own MUA, but hard to get the same results doing something on yourself unless you can take an eye out and watch what you are doing like that.

I'm using creative in the light handed sense. It can still be beauty with dark smokey eyes or lots of eye color, but I prefer clean. :-)

I consider the makeup on my avatar right now creative, but it's still definitely a beauty shot.

in case I change it:

Good catch on the eyes, but the nose has a little more emphasis than the lips, so while it is a beautiful shot, I personally wouldn't consider it a beauty shot.

Man, I didn't even notice she had a nose and lips. :-)

I have really good skin, actually. Aside from the occasional breakout, I have no real problems.

thats a problem...you shouldnt notice the nose, but the Eyes and Lips are how a human face creates emotion. So if you aren't noticing mouth, you aren't doing much more than parts-modeling (yes, the eye is a part so I used that term before anyone criticizes me for it).

As for you having good skin, good skin isn't going to give you the same result as good makeup...Where is that before and after youtube video so I don't have to go scan my sample photos book.

Here are two good ones. I guess good photoshopping should be counted as much as good makeup. The first one is PS, the second one MUA + PS.

Beauty shot is a close up- almost like a head shot.

I'm not sure... would it be fair to say that a beauty shot is a headshot with more context?  Headshots are generally about the model.  Beauty shots are about the the makeup, mood, some sort of storyline, without necessarily being editorial.  I'd say a cosmetics or skin care ad would be a beauty shot, because there's a story there.  Something other than the model is being sold.

Yes- you are right. There is more context.
I was thinking of composition terms.

Skin care or cosmetics is a perfect example.

I would add that, in my opinion, beauty shots are generally more high key lighting of the face. I don't feel the background needs to be bright, but there should be much less dramatic shadow on the model. Portrait headshots use shadow to accentuate the features of the subject, where beauty shots rely on evenly lit faces with fantastic makeup and a flawless appearance. There are, of course, always exceptions.

For me, beauty makeup is all about enhancing someone's facial features, so I think "beauty shot" is more like an up-close/clean headshot (like most cosmetic companies' ad)

A snap shot is a candid. A picture taken with no thought about pose or lighting, but just taken at a moment, typically with a point-and-shoot camera. But there are some very impressive snapshots at times. As for the make-up; no, its fine.

High-Key: High Contrast, with intentionally blown out highlights. Portrait, a photograph which is meant to show emotion and personality of the model.

Scroll up a little, I edited one of the OPs port images into something that better resembles a beauty shot, though editing a JPG is a pain in the ass, especially a realy small one with a computer set to left-handed when you're a righty.
