This is no joke, all though I do find it funny...

Tonight on my (Michigan) local channel 7 news they did a story on thigh to heart health ratios.

Apparently if you measure LESS then 23.8 inches around at your thigh you have an elevated heart failure risk.

If you measure LESS then 18 inches around, your hearth failure risk sky rockets.

I was never really into the skinny ladies, guess science backs the guys who likes those athletic girls = )

I'll try and catch the rest of the report and update lol.

Peace and eat a cheese burger,
Steven

Do you have a link to this?  I was under the impression that naturally skinny people are healthier.

If you are talking about anorexia or bulemia, then yes, their heart will stop beating from prolonged abuse.

I'm not buying this.

23.8 inches for a thigh? That's the size of most high fashion models' waist's.

I mean 24" is the standard waist size of a high fashion model...so how 23.8" thighs pose a risk is beyond me.

I call BS on this report.

I heard about that measured my thighs and they are like 17 inches. That's kind of depressing... haha

I lift weights though, I think this study is a hoax. Some people are smaller framed and no matter what they do, they can't get their thighs this big.

Those numbers are absurd.

24 inch thighs are NOT tiny thighs. That's my waist and I'm crazy healthy.

So you're saying girls with thighs smaller than 23" are not athletic?

I don't know if "eat a cheese burger" is really the correct conclusion to draw from this.

Okay...but your thigh circumference will always be less than your waist size...am I missing something?

If this hypothesis is true about thighs...wouldn't it be the same for waist sizes?

I heard from Dr. Oz on Oprah about guys...if you're waist size is 36" or more, you're more likely to have health problems.  I have never heard of the opposite.

Anything that tells me it's okay to eat cheeseburgers is okay in my book!!

On a related note...how in the wide, wide world of sports have Jack in the Box ultimate cheeseburgers escaped FDA oversight and regulation????  They are a DRUG dude!!!

Edited to add that I measured mine at the fullest part, too; btw, I'm 44 (10/16/64).

absolutely rediculous!! I am in the process of losing weight and getting in better shape and my STARTING measurement for my thigh (at the WIDEST part right near the bikini) was 22.875 inches!  And that is for a 5'9" 152lb female!  So according to this report I need to pack on some more weight?!!? lol  My middle thigh has never measured more than 19.5-20 inches.

Absolute sillyness! tongue

This can't be right!  Mine measure at 22 (which is apparently bigger than a few people who posted) and if you look at my pictures, my thighs would not be described as "skinny" by any stretch.

I just measured one of my thighs, out of curiosity.

At the widest part (towards the top--about 1" down from my crotch) it was about 21.5".  Maybe less, as I was using a metal measuring tape, so it wasn't perfectly flush against me.

I'm by no means "supermodel thin", with my 39" hips on a 5'3" frame lol  But still, 21.5" (or so) falls below that "elevated heart failure risk number.  Despite some other health issues, my heart has been deemed to be in wonderful condition (gosh, at least something works right!).

I'm calling bogus on this one.  But really more because some people are just built very tiny.

The OP just has a thing for thicker thighs...which is why he is not posting any responses.

Correlation does not equal causation - basic science!

For example - the murder rate in New York follows the same pattern as the sales of ice cream in New York...By the logic of these idiots, ice cream causes people to kill each other!

i'm 7 months pregnant and got an extra x lbs on me (not telling you how many). my thigh around the thickest part is 21.5

and its not as though i'm starving myself (says the girl who's had 6 meals today alone).

like patrick said just because the two correlate doesn't mean that one causes the other.

There is something that is not being reported accurately.  Here is a link to the documentation for the actual [Danish] study (on the British Medical Journal website):

http://www.bmj.com/cgi/reprint/339/sep03_2/b3292

I've been reading through it and haven't found the problem yet.  It does say that they measured the right thigh at the very top (fullest where it joins the buttock) and I noticed that the mean age of the female participants was 46.

I'm going to look over this some more to figure out where the reporting translation went wrong.

Studies show men get stupid around women with big tits. Therefore big tits causes male stupidity.

That is incorrect... I'm what you'd call "naturally skinny" and I try as hard as I can to gain weight but it seems impossible...and it causes me health problems. No I'm not anorexic or bulimic.

Um... based on what evidence? But for sake of contributing to this thread-

The biggest my thighs have EVER measured around was just over 22 inches.

Different people have different body types.

However, I did have a small heart-related problem while already in the emergency room. Heart problems are hereditary.

There are many causes of heart problems. Heredity is not the only cause.

Isn't it healthier to carry weight around the hips/thighs than the upper body?

No that that is what the OP is saying, just could be related.

This study was published by the British Medical Journal, where I'm sure they know something about science.

There is SOMETHING here that the media is not being reporting correctly about the study - I just haven't figured out yet what it is!

Huh??? Why can't a skinny girl be athletic or an athletic girl be skinny?

I've tried to gain weight since I began street dancing in high school; I got to 150 by "eating a cheeseburger" (eggplant parm with honey mustard, actually, with a protein shake at least 3 times a week at 2 am as my 4th meal). Now I'm much healthier back at 130, even though I'm "skinny" by everyday standards.

Responsible statistics 101: correlation does not equal causation.  Everyone who failed that lesson, go sit in the corner and talk about the statistical probability of an ignoramus correctly identifying the 37 sub-sub-cultures of punk narcissism in greater southwestern Bohemia.

This is ridiculous. My thighs are pretty big (was a gymnast and a dancer for a million years and I pack on muscle easily) and measure 18.5 inches at their fattest point. I think anyone who has seen me in hotpants or a mini skirt could safely say I look very healthy!
