The only thing about a nude model that arouses me is if she shows up on time, ready  to work, conducts herself in a professional manner and is serious about what she does.  If you get your thrills by working with nude models, maybe a career change is in order, sell your camera and take the check to the bank and cash it for a pile of $1 bills....go to the strip club instead.

Interesting posts...
Personally, anyone who says they have never been aroused may be dead...or they may have lost their edge.
The art is not to show it.
I usually don't get aroused during the shoot.  On the rare occassion that I have, I just didn't show it.  Stay busy and concentrate on what I needed to do.  Afterall, I am always telling the model that her job is to seduce the camera...and I am attached to that camera.
We are human, and human nature says we are genetically encoded for that arousal.  If not, we could skip foreplay altogether.  That isn't saying that we aren't professionals, or that we are making "porn" as someone has so convieniently deluded himself into believing.  Read some of the stories by guys like Earl Miller and the other playboy/penthouse photographers.  Do you think they are impervious to the beauty of the human form?  If they're not, then what makes anyone think we would be.
If you can't seduce and excite the photographer (mentally), then you aren't going to seduce the viewer.  People can tell if you are into the shot or just a "piece of meat" being used by the photographer to get a picture.
I go to great lengths to find the right girl for the right shot...do you think I would bother if I knew it would be subpar?

I have been aroused by one of my nude models.

Of course, he's my boyfriend, but still!

So you're saying my nudity wouldn't turn you on?

That hurt me in the heart, Plastercasting. That hurt me in the heart.

I pity you.

I don't beleive anyone is suggesting walking around in a pair of gym shorts with a boner you could hang a hat on or anything, nor is anyone suggesting that anyone has "acted" upon said boner.

I had a model get up off a stool once and she had left a bit of a "spot".  So what, I should have thrown her and her escort off the premises because she was enjoying herself and got a little dewey?

Give me a break.

Fault me all you want, but I'm honest.

And so far, I've never had a model fault my honesty.

Mark

Refreshing attitude Mark.  I agree with you totally.  But going back to the OP, I think posing a question like that on an open forum really isn't appropriate and lacks good judgment.  But then again that's life and we all slip up from time to time so please don't flame the OP (or me) too much.  I think a question like this would be more appropriate posed to a group of photographers in a discussion offline.

As for the several comments flaming the OP, don't overreact.  I honestly don't think he meant offense to anyone.  He's just stating a fact of life that happens for some photographers AND some models (nicely mentioned by Mark) and just wanted to get some input.

So many times many of us overlook the fact that we are the most sexual animal on this little planet.  We can have sex at will and don't have to wait for a "heat" period to be ready for sex (like nearly all other animals).  Yet, due to religion, societal pressure, etc we spend all our lives trying to behave like we're not sexual.  Can you be sexual, well-behaved and professional?  Absolutley!  I've shot with several models who are and have several friends who are very much so.  I think it is normal to acknowledge your sexuality although personal responsibility says that doesn't mean you should share it with everyone in an open forum smile

Aroused?

No, ...a great energy and appreciating that some one has sex appeal? Yes
Have I been turned on? No ...My mind set just isnt there. I can honestly say that as long as I am shooting it just doesent get that personal.

I am sure it happens, and it may very well happen. If it does, I may have t date the gal, because it means she is striking a chord that goes deeper than sex.

I become nervous and hope that the shoot is successful...I'm also concerned about the look of the photo and try to make it more artistic so it doesn't seem pornographic. I feel when it comes to nudes theres such a thin line between artistic and erotic...pornographic.  Then of course there's that whole "eye of the beholder" thing.  To some it's artistic...erotic and to others it's pornographic.

To anwer the question...NO...I'm not aroused.

Maybe it's just me, but quite a few of these posts insisting that no arousal occurs remind me of the words of Shakespeare when he said, with apologies, "The [photographer] doth protest too much, methinks."

I just find it funny how they pretend nothing happened

I guess some models could be offended by it
but if anything its a form of flattery

...yup, you're right-on. ~pffft~
I get turned on by every shoot with a model from the preparation(including buying clothes and props-hats, jewelry, boots gloves...)to the set choices, the lighting configurations, the experimentation, the makeup and hair styling, the interplay of it all including the model(s) and me.

i'm sorry, but any photographer here that is discussing whether or not they get "boners" or get "arroused" during shoots needs to reconsider their status as PROFESSIONALS!  Not in any industry, entertainment or modeling alike, should one in a position such as ours, discuss (especially to the model!!!) whether or not you get turned on or not.

this is a conversation meant to be had in private or not had at all.  although I agree it is normal to be turned on, it is NOT okay to let those feelings peak their ugly heads out in a professional setting such as a photoshoot.

i realize their is no written moral code of ethics or behavior for photographers, but postings like this make me realize their should be, and if anything, it should be understood.  even in the business world, when a pretty girl wearing skimpy clothing shows up at the office or work place it is not okay to act on those feelings!!

before any other "professional photographers" start talking about their hard-ons they get, please reconsider to save yourself the embarassment.

Where is your sense of humour, hon?

I get turned on by my male models. I'm human. I can't help it. And if I'm doing a sexy shoot and there's no response downstairs  , well, I'll be disappointed!

Does this make me unprofessional? Maybe. Does this make any guys not want to be in front of my lens or make any photographers not want to shoot me?

Probably not.

You need to chill, dear. This boner talk is all in good fun and jest,  so get with the program. I slipped you a Viagra in your drink there.

let the fun begin!

...And as for "acting on those feelings," being turned on is not acting on those feelings.

Totally pouncing on my nude model would be acting on them.

...not to say I haven't done that before...

The important thing isn't whether you get aroused; if you're making really sexy photos you probably will. It's how you BEHAVE and the respect with which you treat the model that counts. Professionalism and respect for the project should override the physical reaction of arousal.

For all the candid and honest replies from photographers, a possible solution to the "arousal problem"

Buy a mannequin . Some of them are very life like. You can Touch, change clothes, twist arm,  will stay steady, hold a pose etc. For Lingerie and swim wear only.

If you are turned on by a Mannequin then you are a whacko . See a shrink.

Well, Miss M , would be my pleasure I am sure.
I am, however, celebrating my 40th wedding anniversary in Las Vegas this July-
renewing our vows by Elvis, have front row seats to Cirque's "LOVE" at the Mirage and a Tower Suite at The Wynn Hotel.
...now we wouldn't want to put a damper on those plans, would we?
I would photograph you falling in bed, though , or on the enchanted Gold Forest floor, and, as this thread would have it, I may be feeling the pleasure of the occassion without guilt accompanied by a great feeling of creating some art
together.
