Jessica Jan 11 06 01:35 pm Link There is nowhere in New York that is decently priced place and nowhere that is bad like Detroit, Michigan. "East Williamsburg" is really Bushwick. Jan 11 06 01:42 pm Link How many posts are you going to make??? I'll just copy my reply to you from your other post: Decently priced??? How many bedrooms??? NYC proper or the burbs??? more info needed!!! Jan 11 06 01:47 pm Link Uh Detroit has the most crime of any city in the U.S. There isnt a city in New York on that list. Very different places. There isnt anywhere in New York decently priced. Good luck. Jan 11 06 01:47 pm Link Model Sarah wrote: You mean Camden and Newark NJ lost the crown? Jan 11 06 03:26 pm Link i recommend anywhere in manhattan below 14th street. check craigslist for shares if you are on a budget. also some agencies have apt they use for models so you might wanna check with them. good luck. If you don't have a job lined up and aren't independently wealthy, you won't find a place on your own. My favorite hoods are in Brooklyn, primarily Boerum/Cobble Hill, Park Slope, Carrol Gardens (Tons, I mean TONS of restaurants, bars, shops etc...bustling art scene, quiet residential blocks)...All are kinda pricey depending on transportation proximity and the "niceness" of the given block, but you should be able to find someone looking for a roommate with relative ease. Ballpark apt rents: Studio-$1000-$1200, 1 BR $1100-$1800, 2BR $1500 and up, 3BR $2000 and up. Most 2 BR shares are around $800-$1000/person, 3 shares are cheaper. Other B'klyn alternatives that are a little farther out, but cheaper- Prospect Heights, Ft. Greene, Sunset Park, Windsor Terrace. I don't recommend Williamsburg for a few reasons, 1: it's really inconvenient to the rest of Brooklyn as far as trains go. 2: It really only has one train line (the L) which has frequent weekend shutdowns. 3: It's overpriced for what you get due to the trustfund hipster insurgency. I also have friends up in Manhattan near Columbia and Washington Heights, being a college hood, roommates abound. Most of the rest of manhattan isn't worth the rent you'll pay. Astoria and Long Island City in Queens are also great, but a little less convenient. Areas to avoid (B'klyn)... the afroementioned East Williamsburg (ferrel dogs, 15 yearolds with Glocks), Bedford-Stuyvesant (15 yearolds with Glocks), East New York (11 yearolds with Glocks), Flatbush, Brownsville, Bushwick Areas to Avoid (Manhattan)...Morningside Heights, Certain Parts of Harlem (varies) Email me if you want, I've helped friends make the transition many times... Jan 11 06 11:15 pm Link Krista Muller wrote: In NYC it all depends on how close you live to public housing (hate to be blunt)... I'm right around the corner from a project...a relatively decent project, and I hear gunshots weekly. But I've been here 6 years with little incident...wanna talk scary? Try D.C. for sure, holy crap. Jan 11 06 11:19 pm Link Justin N Lane wrote: I lived less than a block from a housing project for the first 6 months I lived in NYC and never heard a single gunshot. Then again, I was desensitized to the sound of gunshots by living in Virginia for several years. I guess people could have been blowing each other's windows out with cannon and I wouldn't have noticed unless MAYBE it was my own window. No trouble ever and cheap. Jan 12 06 10:13 pm Link pkun1 wrote: got a friend moving up at the end of the month...it is dirt cheap compared. She was in the east village and is tripling her space for less money~ Jan 12 06 10:17 pm Link I just bought a place in East harlem. It is not as good as the west. But that's cool cause I'm hoping the property will appreciate in the same vein as west harlem. If you're scared at all, then move down a bit toward columbia, but beware you'll pay through the nose for the privilege of living 20 blocks south. It's really not worth it. Get in to harlem while the pickings are good, you've probably got about 2 more years before it's all a wash. Jan 12 06 10:24 pm Link There are lots of nice neighboorhoods in Brooklyn... I live in one of them Jan 12 06 10:25 pm Link There's always LA! Great weather - work year round! I saw on the news tonite that Los Angeles is the homeless capital of the country... I work in west LA and I see homeless folks everyday - in Beverly Hills!!!!!!! It's pretty crazy... But hey if you're making close to 100k you'll do just fine!!! Jan 12 06 10:25 pm Link Model Sarah wrote: Im with you on that one. Jan 12 06 10:27 pm Link Don't move to NYC and live outside of Manhattan! I'm from CA and I made that mistake when I first moved out here and lived in Hoboken, NJ. I was so freaking miserable!! It was like being in a jail cell looking at those damn skylines!!! Screw the skyline live amongst the chaos! You won't regret it Look at www.craigslist.org for apt sublets and shares and for job openings. This is the most used website in NYC and it found me the greatest roomie of my life and it has also secured my friends a lot of jobs. Check it out! Good luck with your move. I would recommend living in the East Village or Lower East Side shares run anywhere from 700 to 900 per month. Which is great since you don't need a car and it's near the subway D Jan 12 06 10:59 pm Link Diana Moffitt wrote: LOL Moffitt, you're such a snob :-* ... however, if one can find digs one can possibly afford... even if it means living 3 to a room... there is nothing quite like manhattan in the morning... the smell of bankers wafting up from the streets below... Im in ct now and pay 850.. ( well would be 1200 if the landlord wasnt best friends with my grandma) anyway..Move to NYC and not outside..Craigs list is good for sure ,what diana said lol Jan 12 06 11:27 pm Link Justin N Lane wrote: yeah, but they're stranded every weekend when the L train is fucked up. every time i go over there i end up spending like $50 in transportation. and there's way too much dog poop over there. more than the stinkin' west village! Jan 12 06 11:29 pm Link no one has pointed out yet, that besides the rent being expensive, you pay a socialist tax rate. i wouldn't recommend living in the city unless you're pulling in about $70k.
