Must men take everything in a perverted way? You can say it with a straight face and be very professional.

I agree with James....I just tell the model what I need for the shot and if she needs to spread her legs then I tell her, what is so creepy about using the english language instead of trying to find some creative way of telling her a normal thing to do....to me if I were a model, the creative fancy way of telling me to spread my legs would sound more creepy than just saying, spread you legs a little then if it is not enough tell her to spread them more...

geez it is not rocket science on how to direct a model nor does it involve reinventing the English language.

I was dragged to an all Doctor's Christmas dinner a couple a times in the past, and you should hear the vagina jokes these M.D.'s throw across the table. ...I was shocked!  ...humored as hell but, shocked!

Had me wondering how ill the penis jokes are in the all Female Doctor's Christmas dinner version are.

I just saw the title and figured there would be TONS of shenanigans and tom foolery transpiring in this thread smile

But to answer your question, just show her the pose you want. As long as you're being professional and not hitting on her, there's no reason she should freak out at you asking her to "spread her legs." Bringing pose guides or getting into the poser yourself to show her are fine too.

Tons of people have given you good ways to ask it though. I think it's just important to communicate with the model. Make her feel comfortable.

This is totally platonic . . . notice he has no penis.

better yet why do they need to make threads on it

your model will know what you're talking about, i've shot both clothed shots with legs apart and naked shots and it's pretty easy to tell what you're going for with either of them

I have never in my life been asked ''spread your legs''  or if I have
I was so traumatized i have blocked out that memory!

Seriously, manners are very important
and there is never any need to phrase things like that.

He can say '' point that knee over there, and this one over here...'' etc
and call it 'opening' or 'wider' even 'stretching' but not SPREAD!
Sheesh.

I have often been asked like, ''can you open wider comfortably? lets crouch down , move the feet apart more, press your knees back, blag blah...
He can  come out and say,'' I want to get the legs wide apart, wider, but its not going to look sleazy...''

Any version of ''SPREAD 'EM'' is not professional.
and I wouldn't want to hear the word PORN mentioned, personally.

I've had a photographer tell me to spread my legs on a shoot and I made a joke out of it.  I really don't see a model having a problem with it.  If what you are trying to accomplish is a picture sort of like the one in your OP, then since the model is wearing clothes...I highly doubt she will be thinking you are asking her to show you pink rather than just to spread her legs for a pose.

Such poses are very common these days in print work. Such a pose is not intended for the camera to see undies or genitalia. If a model takes offense at the photographer asking her to spread her legs in so many words, then she might want to consider a different creative outlet. It's no different than asking her to move a hand or tilt her head.

Many models won't do a spread-shot, we see it stated in their ports all the time. They usually post, no spreads, no pink, no open leg.

If my idea requires a spread pose I look for a model that is OK with doing these poses. I discuss what I want before making the shoot appointment and there has never been a problem in getting the pose.

It's a lot easier with you bondage models.  We just rope you to a spreader bar & no directions are needed.  tongue

The OP was asking about getting the model to do an open legged straddling stance while seated and CLOTHED tho.  The models you're talking about are referring to nude shoots.

Whats the best way do models like to be told... "spread your legs wide?"

I find it a little creepish and uncomfortable to just flat out tell a model to spread her legs without her giving me a weird look...

Whats the best way would you like the photographer to pose you with words for a shot like this...

After reading some of the responses here I can see where some models have been made to feel uncomfortable and in turn why some photographers worry about what they say.  sad

I wish people were more straightforward about it.

When photographers have to cut around and try to find a 'polite' way of asking, they're more just admitting to their own discomfort. Just ask.
While some people won;t do it at all, not even clothed, some are totally willing to do it for the right person, or if you just simply ask, or will even naturally show it without noticing or caring.
It makes me think of the people who awkwardly tell ME that I don't have to be nude for the entire shoot.

*shrug*  Well I already told you the concept I have for you, and I was very up front that you'd need to be nude & spread eagled the whole time.  smile  It made for a VERY easy explanation, and no creepiness beyond the concept of the photo itself.

Dunno why so many others have trouble doing it that way.

Some good points have been brought up. Instead of words, I think I'm going to keep pictures on my iPhone and show the models the exact pose I'm looking for.

In regards to the word "spread" vs "move your legs apart" the term spread is more straight forward I would say, don't you guys agree?
