At last count there were some 350,000 models on MM, and looking through their portfolios using browse its easy to see that the vast majority (>>80%) of them are unpaid hobby or amateur models, just in it for some fun and exposure.

What do we call them?  If they are not pros, are they amateurs?  What's a nice complementary term for hobby or amateur models?  I really don't like calling them hobby models.

[ this thread has done its dash - move on, nothing else to see here ]

"Hobbyist models"  won I think.
Models
Hobbyists
Part time models

no one suggested amateur

Many consider hobbyist models to be highly valued members of the community. Lots of frustration with flakes.  But that's a separate topic. Sameo stuff.

Whew. Its really a relief to see that GWCs don't outnumber models, yet.

True story. If I had a dollar for every n00b that dropped communication, I could afford that studio on the moon I've always wanted.

I saw someone refer to them as "'models'" and found it to be intentionally derogatory.  YRMV

Oh.. and to the OP.. I've figured something out about the vast majority of the mooooodles on this site. It's simple. They're not really interested in modeling. They just figured out this is a great place to get cool free pictures for their Facebook page. Some of the smart ones also discovered that they can not only get cool free Facebook photos, but they can also get paid for it too.

I'd call them "smart" for pursuing other "realistic" things that likely pay the bills while still doing something they presumably enjoy.

I  call them "Models"...because that is what they're doing here.
Who cares if they're just wanting some cool shots for their facebook pages?
Some of them are dipping a toe in the water to see if it could turn into a career, some are having fun,and others are earning some money. Their motive doesn't matter to me.

My comment was more a jab at the majority of the photographers than the models. Keyword - Free.

In other words, they're playing many of ya'll for suckers.

no internet model is the overlap of noobs, hobbyists, and self pro-claimed professionals that actually have another job or sugar daddy/parent elsewhere that still pays the bulk of their bills smile

I don't know.  What do you call a hobbyist or amateur photographer?

A ho-tographer?

The terms "photographer" or "model" does not denote professional.  Neither does artist or golfer or whatever.

No, it would be "artist" of "hobbyist".

GWCs are a small subset of both amateur and professional photographers.

I'm a hobbyist -- since I'm a realist and there's not much of a market for a 5'2" unremarkable model especially in Denver -- but I show up to every shoot I schedule and give it 110% so I would still consider myself a model. It isn't my fault no one wants to pay me for it.

Yay.  I know lots of hobbyists that have a professional work ethic. Planning, preparation, communication, shows up everytime, works their butt, makes it work.  I wish we could find more just like you. smile

Let's talk MM into removing the "I shoot nudes" tickbox on your portfolio and replacing it with "I show up to every shoot and give it 110%"

You answered your own question. They are called hobbyist. It doesn't make them any more or less professional than the people who do this as a living. They just have different goals.

I call 'em models until they give me reason not to.

I've gotten wonderful images and had very positive experiences with some amateur/hobbyist models, so are they really a waste of time? Not the ones who show up on time and give it their all... and while I've suffered plenty of flakes and wannabes who disappear after the first mention of a real shoot, I've dealt with plenty of amateurs and noobs who bust their butts to make the shoot happen.

I don't dismiss anyone as a waste of time until they've actually wasted my time. Then, I'm a pretty unforgiving SOB.

On the other hand, if they haven't logged in since the day they opened the account, it's a pretty safe bet they're in it just to prove to friends they're a model.
