David Lumen Photography wrote: JT...with all due respect...there are a ton of threads in the MM archives that deal with this very issue. It comes up all the time. Some even quote the US Code where the copyright laws can be found. I've come across some very clear explanations. It makes little sense for me to go into great detail here and re-invent the wheel...while hi-jacking the thread at the same time. The one thing that is usually implied but never stated in these threads is that individual agreements can be made that supersede copyright law. So...you can make any kind of agreement that works for you and your model as long as it doesn't violate the criminal code. In the absence of an agreement, e.g., a release, the situation defaults to copyright law. David, there are other threads? :-) Most certainly understand your not wanting to reinvent the wheel, so to speak. There are obviously others who haven't schooled themselves with those resources. There is also a lot of uninformed/ignorant material posted. Wouldest thou be kind enough to select and list a link or a few links that you approve of so interested parties can gnaw on them (and no have to wade thru what ignoramuses and rif raf have written)? :-) This ain't to hijack thread but it's obviously something highly relevant to more than a few of us. Thank you for your kindest consideration of this request. [Also thank you for spelling "supersede" correctly!]

Homework for the students of group dynamics: Read and discuss http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuckman' … evelopment as it relates to this cruise shoot. This is instructive to other shoots, work, etc. It comes to light when someone asked why we wait until the last few hours to do our best work (in El Morocco at o'dark 30 Sunday before disembarkation)! I explained that groups go thru stages: Forming, Storming, Norming & Performing. It takes time. Of course catalysts can accelerate the process. Then there's Parkinson's Law, [http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkinson's_law] but that's another paradigmatic lense. We MAY discuss this more in future postings.

NYMPH wrote: This was a literary highlight for me - as an creative writing major, I had to draw attention to it. I've been teased for my love of alliteration, so I have to commend another wordy when they excel with it. The rest of your points also hit home with me, JT. Alexandra did a fantastic job of marketing herself and letting everyone know her caliber. Many other talents were unnoticed or not presented, to the detriment of many I approached this shoot with a very happy-go-lucky attitude. I could have hustled, I could have werked, but I sized up the situation and chose to play it cool. I would have preferred a more comprehensive introduction, though. Ira's name was brought up somewhere - and he was one of the photographers that I would have been thrilled to work with, make time for, and even hunted down, but I had no idea his about his caliber until it was too late. His talent was not apparent via his equipment, his vocabulary, or his attitude (i.e., it was not readily apparent among the mob and mayhem). Once I saw him actually shoot Jin N Tonic (on the last day) his skill was absolutely obvious, and I felt like a fool. Looking at all the pictures he's posted, I'm saddened I did not take advantage of his talents. I suggested it before, and I will suggest it again: a proper meet and greet, in my opinion, prior to the actually cruise, should be in order. Somewhere, somehow, where everyone is required to attend, people are not distracted or previously intoxicated, or generally overly excited. In a location where everyone can access internet, show their books, strut their stuff, and wear name tags. If I were to take a candid moment, and allow some blatant self promotion, I would say that could have, and perhaps should have, advertised myself a little stronger, sold myself a little harder, emphasized the strength of my career, etc. Amelia Simone is another name that comes to mind as I ramble shamelessly. I made an ass of myself, tripping over my own words with pure admiration for this young woman. She is an inspiration to me, and a model of very high caliber in my book. Yet, when I spoke with other photographers about her on a few occasions, they did not know her from the other girls, took no special interest, etc. I was aghast. There I go again, trying to compliment one person's point, and rambling off on my own. I shallt not visit the MM Forums at this time of night henceforth! (yeah, bs..) Oh! By the way. I'm the road again starting this Thursday, and I will be gone for two weeks (including a brief stay in the LA area...) But I would adore a few pictures in my inbox upon my return Nice ramble! Amelia sat at my table and while she was not self effacing she certainly wasn't self promoting. It took me a while to figure out how incredible she is. This is not unique to her. There were a couple other high-calibre models who said they've not been invited off the back bench. I said "Really? What's wrong with us?!" The phrase that comes to mind is "Pearls before swine!" :-)

One of our members did this! :-) http://jetlev.com/fly.html Newport prices: weekday $159, weekend $259. (unaudited). 1.5 hours. If you can correctly identify who and post here first, (only one attempt per person) and if I owe you images, then I'll work on yours next! :-) Speaking of image processing. What do models really want? I've been paternalistic and sending what I think they want, Clarkmeister et al say I'm sending too much which takes too long. So let me do something obvious and ask rather than assume (you know what that does. We've seen THAT happen! LOL) Models, I know you want great images instantly or sooner (not going to happen), but what do you want, how many? size? shape? in other words, what are your ideal terms and conditions? Share with us what works for you and what you think works for your colleagues. Remember what may be obvious to you may not be obvious to us...and vice versa. This is not a placative, appeasement maneuver, I really want to know. I've done dozens of shoots but I'm ready to notch it up a little and develop an evidence-based post production process that generates what models generally want instead of just sending them what I think they want and hope they're ecstatic and deliriously happy. :-) Models: when you have received all the images that you expect to receive, can you post to the thread? Togs: when you've completed post production (including image distribution to model) can you also so post to the thread? This is not a race, this is not to make any one look bad or good. This is data collection to get a feel for what actual times are. It's also a communication tool so we can figure out when the model is satiated and has enough images. Thank you. SUMMARY: Survey--what do models really want? Please respond. Models--let us know when you've had enough; togs--let us know when you're done.

FFantastique wrote: SUMMARY: Survey--what do models really want? Please respond. JT! if you are concerned about what the models want then you will forever be a very miserable man lol. typically it is the photog that sets the standard. in a typical NON group shoot, most photogs will send me an invite to a private album online of all the photos posted. ira, for example, did this for our pin up sailor shoot. very noble of him considering the massive amount of photos i am sure each of you walked off the ship with. so while this is appreciated, it is certainly not mandated. most professional photographers will pick their favorites, edit, and send them, and that is what i get whether or not i think i am making a poo face. others will edit their favs, send, and as for approval before putting it up. essentially IT IS UP TO THE PHOTOGRAPHER. if you ask for models, specifically non-professional 'models' that are the norm when you are just starting out ie pretty girls willing to pose for you for free, their demands will know no limit! remember the video i posted? lol. so while i cannot speak from everyone here is what I would like to see - one quality photo, edited, .jpg for posting on MM, my fb, and my website, from each look. possibly two. when you think about it though, i cannot possibly post 10 pictures to my port from the same set anyway. it is about quality, not quantity, so i want the shot that is THE BEST! if i get that one shot, then i am happy. thus far all photogs have been very sweet and obliging in getting photos to me, IT IS APPRECIATED GUYS!!! so those are MY expectations/wants. i feel they are reasonable, and i have no time limit too them. perhaps in a month or so i might send out little messages if there is a look i have yet to see, just a little *nudge* but i would consider that plenty. in the end though, it is up to you based on what you are willing to offer!! since i don't believe you paid models, i would perhaps dropbox photos (like you did with me) and ask them to pick their fav 5 for editing. anything more and we're really never going to hear the end of you on this thread!! ;D

You are correct, that the models' can make unreasonable requests! On the other hand, some of MY requests are in a similar arena :-) Yes, I know it's up to the photographer but like I said, I've been told I give too much. I am shifting from quantity to quality and consequently slower processing. Clarkmeister and I don't agree with which ones are good ones but I trust his judgment. I've worked with other pros and I recognize that our professional judgment is NOT unerring. I did review Ira's links, one which was about how to rank the images with 1-5 stars. It's helpful but still there is so much goodness it's hard to identify exactly where the cutoff is.

FFantastique wrote: What is the best link/thread to explain 2257 to newbie? If you think your images are pornographic and show sexually explicit content or conduct, then comply with 2257 and get the info required to show the model is an adult "performer." This is a separate form to satisfy the US Govt. You still need a model release that spells out acceptable usage for privacy and copyright purposes. Here is a good thread that will get you on your way... https://www.modelmayhem.com/po.php?thread_id=467060 If you just do a forum search on 2257 you will learn a lot. I would also suggest doing a Google on 2257. Home movies, JT? (jk'g )

Try uploading an image to MM, somewhere in the process you should see an option to indicate whether it is 2257 related or not. I'm doing this from memory because my iPhone won't allow me to post directly to MM for some [expletive deleted] reason! (and I'm not near a computer). I plan to revise this when able [just like I'll do post processing when able.] [Historical footnote/question: how did "expletive deleted" enter our lexicon? Hint: Californian.] 18:30 update 10/4/2012 After hitting upload there is a link: "2257 Compliance Info [+]" When you click on the link it expands to: http://www.justice.gov/criminal/ceos/su … tions.html BTW, someone asked me to explain 2257 so I'm trying to provide accurate education to mitigate anyone else from having SNAFUs. :-) Another hint: in addition to Californian, RMN.

FFantastique wrote: Teaser: I spoke with a psychiatrist for several hours this week. More later. Philosophical sililoquay--not for everyone. Complex with intentional ambiguity. Watched Samuel L. Jackson in "Home of the Brave." Those who have served in the military, and there are at least a couple veterans, and one supporting family member that I know of. Despite the recruitment material and movies, it is far from all fun and games. THANK YOU for your service. It is an incredible, mind-warping burden when one makes a mistake and shoots a person in error. You can't recall a bullet. Not as simple as deleting a digital disaster. You can't rewind and do take two. The point is that yes, we had some bad shots on this cruise (whether friendly fire or fragging)--but nobody died. In the whole scheme of things, how important are images compared to life and limb? If model never get their pictures it's most certainly cause for concern but it's not the end of life, no limb's lost. The freedom we have to pursue happiness and to create images is not without costs. It's not surprising that war creates mental instability. Many of us are hardpressed to claim mental stability :-)--even without the trauma of real life and death shoot-no-shoot decisions in the fog of war with little training. We tend to get bent out of shape over relatively trivial matters. Please don't sweat the little stuff. BTW, it is true that I spoke with a psychiatrist for hours. BUT it's intentionally misleading to grab attention and illustrate that many things aren't as they appear. The psychiatrist just happens to be a college friend of mine who was reviewing a medical grant application. [Hope this makes some modicum of sense!] SUMMARY: * Military personnel and supporting families--thank you. * Misfires in military or Mexico action can be unfortunate. * Military mistakes tend to be more significant and mess with the mind. We tend to be micro. Hopefully this macro view puts perspective. Slightly edited for clarity: Sat Oct 6, 2012 11:25.
