First shot of live subject with AB Ring Flash. When he sees that I'm set up Tink will often lay in front of the camera as if waiting for me too shoot him.

So far I like the AB Ring Flash but found that (when using a tripod) I cannot flip the camera to Portrait position. The weight of the camera (D200) and the RF will not allow the two units to remain in place on the tripod. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

You can get some kind of bracket system.

That pose is so overdone!  I am guessing it is a TFF agreement - Time for Food!

Ack!  Kitty Porn on MM! tongue

Check on one of the other AB ringlight threads.  I think this has been discussed.  You will need a pretty hefty tripod+head to handle the weight of the ringlight/camera combo.

"Kitty porn on MM..."Thanks for the laugh! To all responders: Actually solution for Portrait shooting is to hand-hold the camera and RF. It ain't that heavy...

Exactly.

Wanna feel some weight?  Try using the profoto ring.  It's about 4 lbs without the camera.  The AB unit is much lighter.

Edit:  I was wrong.  The profoto unit is almost 5 lbs.  The Hensel ring for the porty pack is 4 lbs.

This is something that's starting to give me an eye-twitch.  There are people crying and whining because the Alien Bees ring is made out of plastic, but some of the same people (not this OP) are whining about how heavy the unit is.  I'm suprised Paul's head hasn't exploded from fustration.

As for rotating, hmm maybe try a rotating flash bracket like the stroboframe RL's or something similar where the camera not the flash turns.

Does the tripod not lock down, or is it just a matter of sandbagging the tripod legs for the weight offset?

Try Kirk Photo and see if there is an L-bracket that will work or if you dare the Cobra is quite a beast.

http://www.kirkphoto.com/

I own their L-brackets, Ball head and quick plates. I also equipped my 300 2.8 and 70-200 with their rotating collar quick release plates.

What model tripod do you have? You may need to get a sturdier one if the one you have isn't up to the task. You may be able to find a used heavier-duty tripod at a camera store if you don't want to pay full price (or check Ebay). Or, it may be your tripod head is wearing out. I had a ball head that refused to hold my camera steady in the vertical position. I got a new head which seems to work quite nicely.

Anyway, just my 2.75 cents worth...

Balcar did have a pseudo ring flash. It was a special shoot through reflector with a pencil light stuck in the reflector. It worked well and was very light. I looped the pencil strobe head cable over my shoulder.

Try to put it on a light stand and use a hinged light mount bracket like this one:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/control … ype=search

It will allow you to go from landscape to portrait when you need. Granted you have to move the light stand a few inches to reposition yourself. I suggest a sandbag on the lightstand to give you more stability.

I have used this system because it allows me more control when framing. Hand held was to all over the place for me.

Hope this helps...

The Calumet /Bowens unit is fairly light. I have mounted my H2 with the 50-110 on it and done hand held. Mostly though I put it on a tripod since I mostly do structured and not freeform shots.
Quit being a girly man, it's good exercise handholding these things.....

Search the forums, there have been several threads on this.  Lots of discussion about the pros and cons of this unit.

Alan,

No other issues. Just play with it a while. Pleased to find that the light (AB 800) can be used on light stand.

Oh my. That is definitely ghetto. I love it. You creative genius!

I feel bad for you guys in remote cities with no rental counters. I was one of you, so I felt the pain! My boy Nick Adamson did a damn fine job making a home made ring flash. See his work from my page. I think he's the 4th thumbnail on the top row of buddies.
