Apparently a new SLR will be replacing the infamous 5D towards the end of 2008. Anyone know anything about this? I heard it from a friend but havn't found any updates or info online about it.

The 5D is famous, not infamous.  Look up the word.  You may have been trying to make a joke, but it falls completely flat because you misunderstand the word "infamous". Sheesh.

it was a backwards stab at nikon (since all their cameras are backwards to begin with)

Well sort of Infamous in that it has sluggish AF, it's consumer body is a dust magnet and it's so long in the tooth the rumor of it's replacement has been around for nearly 2 years. instead they just dropped the price by a grand. Right where it should have always been.

Sorry if I caught some of you on the rebound.  I had a major very painful cramp today.  I was explaining it to a photographer friend via chat who I have many times given hours of sympathy for her illness, and after she was giving me some wrong advice about it that I objected to, she wrote "Ok.  Enjoy your cramp."

I'm sorry I barked at you.  I do like well-written English.

Look up the word.  You too are misusing it, even if you believe what you write about the 5D.

I have a 5D.  It is not a "consumer body", just because it doesn't weigh a ton like a 1Ds2.  It is not a dust magnet, and I change my lenses frequently.  It is only "long in the tooth" by comparison to the consumer DSLRs like the 400D or the 40 Dseries that are replaced every 18 months, but that is because it is not a consumer camera.  If you don't want to buy one, you don't have to, but it is not infamous.

The 5D has an enviable, wonderful reputation due to its astonishing image quality, attested to frequently on this site, on the web, and in print.

"major" meaning a large skeletal muscle, in this case a calf muscle.  "painful" is an accurate report.

I think you are objecting to the word "major", which is often abused in the form "majorly", but my usage was the adjective not the adverb.  You may think that I am illiterate, but even though I never have been an English major (noun), I will let the rest of my posts on this site stand for me.  I was a photography major and then a math / computer science major.  Perhaps you are or were an English major, or perhaps not.

The 1D3 is not a full frame camera.  It is optimized for photojournalists, which may also appeal to a certain style of wedding photographer.

The 5D niche is for generalists who can't afford the leap to the 1Ds3.

That rumor site does not have any inside information.  It is a conveyor belt and aggregator for rumors that appear on other sites.  It is nice to think of what a 5D Mark II might be, but unwise to base buying decisions on the rumors, whether the decision is to buy something or to not buy something.

The rumors I hear is that there is NO replacement for the 5D.  I hope there is one but Only Canon knows.

Why do they need to replace it yet? It has no competition.

They will replace it to get manaufacturing benefits and logistic benefits. Thus new processor, firmware and screen. Probably dust removal technology as well.

New sensor and firmware will give higher ISO.

So manufacturing and marketing benefits for Canon but for existing 5D users why change?

People have been predicting, incorrectly, that the 5D replacement is "imminent" for the last year or so.  Nobody that will tell knows.

Personally, I am eagerly hoping that one does arrive for 3K or under.  Good luck with your speculation!

I never understood this either.  I had and used a 5d extensively for years, changed lenses often as well.  I never had any dust issues, as long as you change lenses quick, keep the camera pointed down, and don't leave it open laying around you shouldn't have many issues.

Besides really basic sensor cleaning isn't that difficult at all.

My neighbor is the local Canon rep. He has a few cameras in testing with some of the local pros. The name is Canon 6D II. 3 processors, a full frame chip, 15.3 MP, 5 frames per second, 3200 ISO, partial titanium body, due out this fall at $2100.00.

For me the next body will be a 1DmkIII. I have a real need for speed these days because I have been doing more sports stuff.

Now to the 5D upgrade and rumors. Those that know anything are very likely under NDAs; so, they can't and won't say anything.

I have a 5D which was one of the first to hit these shores. It has worked pretty flawlessly for about 2 years now. I'm very happy with it. I don't think it will get replaced if Canon comes out with an upgrade. I tend to skip over one upgrade version between replacing bodies.

And may I ask why the need to be "ahead of Nikon" ,wouldn't be better that Canon continues to deliver good photographic tools as they have done it until today?

Actually the 5D may well be "infamous"...among Nikon users.

I'm dying for  an affordable full frame camera such as the 5Dmk2, 7d, or whatever they are going to call it. I am a 400d user and I put one of my 18-50 lenses on an old 35mm and was amazed at how wide the 18mm is.

I think Bob is pretty close from what I've heard (although I think he meant 5D II, there is no 6D so it's hard to image a Mark II already!) The new camera should have a new auto focus system, the dust removal system and live preview which has appeared on all the latest Canon DSLR's, and a higher resolution preview screen. Release date is unkown, although I think it may be sooner than expected (I "hope" it might be sooner is probably more accurate!), and the price is always a question given the current problems with the dollar.

If that 18-50mm is an EF-S lens it won't work on a full frame body without some major mods.

You do know that you're using a split infinitive, in the third sentence above, don't you?

Besides which, it's possible for something to be both famous and infamous.  Depending on context and point of view.

What part of "The 1D3 is not a full frame camera" do you not understand?

It is a 1.3 crop camera.

This is photography, a technical art, so details make a difference.
