Aug 26 11 12:39 pm Link Question about portfolio images, copyright infringement & desirability... I've been interested in doing a couple of advertising paintings for my portfolio. Liquor ads, beer ads, tourist destination ads & other types of logos done as body paintings. Do y'all think having a Budweiser or Absolute or See Florida!, etc. shoot is a good album to have when showing to prospective clients? Any idea whether or not I'm breaking written or moral laws by copying someone else's logo as a painting? Aug 31 11 09:56 am Link Cat Camp wrote: I'm not exactly sure how that works, I THINK it is legal to use a logo to show that you know how to paint a logo. But there is probably a legal gray area. I've gotten around this by painting my own logos and showing off that ability. Aug 31 11 10:05 am Link Cat Camp wrote: Well I know that Graphic Design students do "mock-ups" using real brands as well as their own fictitious brands. I know of a college teacher who's favorite assignment instructs students to creatively advertise the Naked Juice brand. One of my photographer friends had to make a Clinique ad for her portfolio in college. So based on my observations, (lol) I imagine that it is legal as long as its portfolio use only. I have a few brand concepts I'd love to shoot too so if I'm epically wrong, I guess we're going down together. Sep 02 11 07:34 pm Link JZino wrote: I think you are safe in portfolio use only....then again, the Internet has changed some of the rules because portfolio's are now seen around the world. Sep 02 11 07:42 pm Link There IS value in showing how well you can technically execute a Known design as a way to prove your ability to execute a specified vision. As opposed to abstract art. How do you know when the artist made a mistake? I agree with Rich.... Portfolio Use Only has been the accepted "ok". Because, even though Portfolio use can be technically a way to earn income off of a BOOKING based on the work represented by a Licensed Character or Logo... the income is not DIRECTLY tied to the Licensed Character or Logo. Yep.... can be argued up one side and down the other in a court of law. I've done Cosplay - and have had good acclaim for the effort. But shifting legal winds is this is the reason I don't actively pursue it. Sep 02 11 08:02 pm Link |
