It can be either really simple (not too much stuff in it) or really complex (sometimes multi-pic ones work as long as they have variety).

Also, BOLD/CONTRAST, and lots of COLOR seems to draw people in, it's all about getting someone to click and view the whole portfolio.

I pass by.  The avatar just doesn't catch my interest.  Eye contact usually helps.  And color.  If you don't have color or eye contact, it needs to be an amazing shot.
