Just curious.  I wonder what percentage of new female models never post any pictures after posting the initial group of pictures they start with.  I suspect it is especially high with the - paid assignments only -  no experience - no nudes - crowd.

If you were a student of mine I would say that you are on your way to coming up with a research question that you can use for a research study. tongue

I am also amazed at the number of photographers who say they have been shooting for 30 years and done all sorts of fancy shit and have a few landscape pics in their MM portfolio.

I'd say it's directly proportional to the amount of legitimate offers they receive.

I imagine a good number of people (models or photographers...or anything else) sign up here, use it for a few days, but then never come back again. I guess some people just never figure out how to use the site or they end up forgetting about it.
I don't have any pictures up from when I first signed up for MM (but back then I wasn't that serious about pursuing modeling and I barely knew how to use the site so all of my pictures were just "selfies". I didn't even start using it again until maybe September of last year when I started figuring out what I wanted to do. I've had this profile since 2011).
But I have come across people who still use this site occasionally yet still only have pictures up from 2 years ago...one of them being someone I was supposed to work with, yet never confirmed with our shoot date with me and nothing was said the day that it was supposed to happen. Oh well.

The number of ports here with no activity for months or even years is staggering.

+1
and those that say they've been a professional photographer for 20+ years and have terrible GWC photos in their port that are years old!

Don't know about the percentage of models who do that, but I update my modeling photos whenever I get new ones back that I love. A number of paid shoots I won't receive any photos or I do not deem the photos to be port worthy. But I still try to update pretty regularly.

Modeling is really just like any other hobby: some people try it for a bit with a lot of interest, but then find it is not for them or they lose interest, some start out slow and develop a love, and really tons of other scenario. But I think the important thing to remember is that while it may be a job of varying degrees for some of us, for a lot of others it is "just a hobby." And there really is nothing wrong with that ^_^

Because life should be about exploration, experimentation and discovery of oneself.

Maybe they discovered, having explored and experimented on MM, that this wasn't for them.

I fail to understand what harm they are doing anybody.

I think we should give some thought to why they have disappeared.

Perhaps MM isn't a particularly friendly place for newbies?

Maybe they got fed up with being pestered to shoot nudes?

Some models can post ten mediocre shots, start getting paid work depending on where they are located, then have little need to update their portfolios, until their look changes.

I found that when my portfolio stayed the same for more than a couple months, people lost interest and paid shoot offers started to slow down. For some people, always having new work is a good way to keep potential clients interested in your work.

For others, not so much. They just have something people will pay for regardless. Different strokes for different folks.

I have to always update my portfolio because I look different in each one. Based on the makeup, and how my hair is styled. I just don't have one of those faces that photograph the same each time or I wouldn't update it as much.

I don't know why people keep pushing the nudes thing though. Some people just don't want to do that. Either because of how they were brought up, not comfortable doing that, or/and because some models are clueless to the fact that some photographers sell those photos online. And when they find out, it's just scary to see there reaction.

Edit: Not talking about artistic nudes. Talking about the sexual nudes where it looks like it's bordering on porn.

It has been my experience that MM models stay active on the site from 6-18 months.  Then they move on to other things to occupy their time.

I also think most girls put up their modeling profile and sit back and wait to be "discovered".  When they see that most offers are non paying or nude if it does pay, and they suddenly realize that they will have to put lots of time and effort and work into getting the modeling gigs they want, they just lose interest.

I think they have this romantic vision that they will become instantly famous after one shoot and Victoria's Secret or Calvin Klein will be calling raving over their amazing look (even though they aren't anywhere near agency stats). When that doesn't happen, they disappear (but I'm sure still refer to themselves as "models").

It is a perfectly legitimate question and to suggest the OP is trolling is insulting. The apparent suggestion that knowledge for its own sake has no value is also absurd.

I would say that most of the people on MM are hobbyists. So they are active for awhile, kick back, then become active again and so forth. But like golfers, some are at it all the time. I know a hobbyist photographer who shoots models weekly, if not twice a week. Myself, maybe 6 times a year.

And as Dekilah said, some dip their toe in and decide it is not for them.

I think it is more likely that they get disappointed at not getting showered with buckets of money and offers of the cover of Vogue, just for gracing MM with their presence.

As an *aspiring* myself - newbie through and through - I can tell you that so far I've discovered there are so many different ways to even BEGIN in an approach to modelling that it isn't really fair to assume everyone should be using sites like this the same way. Some people will use the site soley as an e-portfolio to direct people to, some will come on for the social aspect of the forums, some will focus on direct networking and use the browse function alot. Not all of these activities require regular maintenance. Me, I'm hoping MM can help me make a steady start to build up a portfolio and work from there. If I get paid in the end, good for me I'm *pro,* and if I don't then I'm having alot of fun. Not contributing constantly to MM doesn't mean people aren't willing to work hard to be a model, perhaps they're actually just out there... working hard at becoming a model.
Just my pennys' worth, but as I say my opinion is coming from the bottom of the heap ;-)

Although I think this may also have alot to do with some that just Disappear and Never Return... Personally I'm enjoying Modelling BECAUSE of the challenges it can present; I love a challenge. I'm sure many hoping to be the next Dean Johnson ASAP with no more effort than occasionally donning designer clothes will find themselves disillusioned and move on to an easier venture!

Paying for an account isn't exactly in the cards as of now in for my MM account. I have some photos that are NEVER coming down from this account, but at the same time, I occasionally change up the more recent photos because I'm not as satisfied with them. Most of my modeling pics are on my facebook. Working on uploading a deviantart account with my best photos from each shoot.

Magazines have turned to short articles due to the attention span of today's people, as have other industries.

I think it's the same here.  No "instant success" and they're out of here - off to something else that catches their fleeting fancy.  Few today want to put much effort into anything. You can easily find the exceptions to the rule.  They stand out.
