I just watched this again and things that come to mind

1. Scientific expedition with a crew full of stupid.

2. Lots of dumb stuff happens that just shouldn't happen

To be fair if none of that happened we'd not have a movie.

3. Android likes to mindrape one particular character and watch her dreams.

4. 2093 or thereabouts we have a cheat for FTL or near light speed drive.

5. How did Shaw know the exact part of Scotland to go digging? How did she know that exact cave was the one with the drawings inside?

6. It was kind of fun till all the stupid stuff started happening.

7. They can map all the tunnels but manage to get lost. smh By this point in the movie I wanted to break the DVD in half, but there's just so much bad stuff happening .....

And let's not forget the alien abortion scene..... And running around the ship moments after having one's stomach stapled.

Did Ridley Scott actually have any control of this movie or was he just there for the cash?

What about a heroine barely escaping with her life, and choosing to venture totally unarmed to the planet of the creatures who are trying to destroy humanity?

Instead of simply returning to earth to safety, or at least, reinforcement and arms?

Well... and how the heroine runs away in the path of the slow rolling part of the ship... instead of just stepping aside!

I turned my brain off, and watched a rather entertaining movie.

It's a movie... just watch it.

I REALLY wanted to like this movie but I just didn't get it or understand any of it. I thought it was one of the laziest scripts of the year.

It really is terrible. I tried so hard to like it. It's so visually stunning, and the atmosphere is very cool. But the characters are just so insanely stupid, I just can't ignore it. Someone posted the "Honest Trailer" parody. Here is the CinemaSins take, that show's all the stupidity.

I liked it simply because it was a completely different addition to the franchise yet fitted.
The idea of Prometheus construct was good, the characters good, and the visuals in terms of atmosphere stunning.

You have to suspend belief for the sake of drama sometimes. I could answer some of the ops questions but would take ages. So just to say it's entertainment.

I just watched another movie, Argo this morning. The end was complete rubbish Iranian police cars chasing a plane down the runway. It never happened, and wouldn't. But it was entertaining.

So Prometheus wasn't a pile of poo. It may have disappointed if you expected something different but the clue to what it was is the title. You want to see a pile of poo watch The Great Gatsby remake. The only thing that kept me watching was the costumes. Otherwise it was cringeworthy.

Very disappointing given the high expectations! Having said that I watched it again on Blu Ray recently, and it seems a bit better on the second viewing.

Still, so many things that could have been done better!

I grew up reading old school science fiction, and one thing you could count on was the author getting the science mostly right.  Did anyone run the script by a science advisor, or is Ridley Scott such an 800 pound gorilla that no one dares question his vision?  There are just so many things wrong with Prometheus that it would make a great alcohol poisoning inducing drinking game.

All the characters are beyond stupid:  getting lost despite having a 3-D holographic map of the alien ship's interior; playing with the alien penis snake; running in a straight line; spending one's entire career seeking alien life and upon finding it, moping around and getting drunk (partying and getting happy drunk would make more sense); not noticing that a woman is covered in blood with staples holding her belly together; hostile aliens have killed all your crewmates, yet you go searching for their home planet alone - it goes on.

That said, Prometheus is gorgeous.  I own it on Blu-ray, and despite the mind numbing stupidity of the movie, I enjoy looking at the pretty pictures.

Wanna talk about stupidity? Who's the stupid person that wasted their money in outright paying to own the DVD or to shell out money in renting it? wink

(I'm teasing btw)

The reason that I don't pay attention to critics is that they look for things to criticize about a movie.  I have enjoyed movies that the critics didn't like!

I came into this with expectations since this was billed as "the prequel to alien" and that we might find out where they came from and why.... What we got was gorgeous visuals suspended in poo.

A couple more points I noticed..

AvP takes place closer to our time so Weyland Corp. knows about the Predators and Aliens from this adventue I imagine. I think David knew a hell of a lot more then was let on in the film.... He clearly had been given an agenda to run by the old guy. Oh and on that why couldn't they have hired a proper old dude to play the part of Weyland? The makeup on Guy Pearce was horrid...

I don't outright hate the movie, but I don't like it either..... I just hope the sequel shows us what happens to Elizabeth and that the same actress plays her.

The idea was stupid, the characters were stupid, the action was dull, and the premise was stupid.

Let's see, multi-trillionaire geezer dying of some disease decides to fund a trillion dollar expedition into outer space based on some hieroglyphic mumbo-jumbo, to find some aliens whom he has no proof exists, in the hope that they are magical doctors that will cure him. Instead of simply employing the trillion-plus dollars on earth funding research from the best available minds to cure him.

And that is the HIGH point of the logic.

After I read lots of explanations of the movie online, and re-watched it, I saw that it did in fact have some merit as a movie.  But they tried to cram so much stuff into so short of a movie that without all the extra material on the internet I never would have figured it out.

Did it really look that good?

Looked more gimmicky than anything else.

The dudes in rubber suits in Aliens were more impressive to me.

This movie was Sci-Fi channel quality. And I don't mean GOOD Sci-Fi, I mean Sharknado territory.

Any episode of Sliders had more believable character motivation than this high budget movie.

*looked at thread title*

Thought
"Well, I had guessed that was pretty well established already.."

I have a terribly hard time watching stupid movies - where the characters spend all their time doing stupid things.

and using the same logic that James Fenmore Cooper's characters used - (which were written as delusional - or brain damaged - or miracle workers)

Can we also talk about how THAT happened instead of del Toro's Lovecraft movie?

He talks like he's pretty determined to still make this movie, but no one wants it because of Prometheus.

Don't twist words. Movies are entertainment, they provide a brief escape from reality.

Prometheus was a decent film, the critics consensus was overwhelming positive. I find most of the criticism in this thread laughable. It's science fiction, not based on reality.

Don't characters in sci-fi/horror always tend to do dumb stuff? Isn't that part of most plots to get things going -- cause and effect, an action that triggers a series of unfortunate events? What's the problem? Why are people so hung up on bad science in a science fiction movie. Who really gives a shit?

I judge movies based on cinematography, script, direction, production value, among a number of other factors. I've never questioned the science in a Michael Bay movie, but I always passionately hate on the cheesy one-liners and his one dimensional characters.

Absolutely! Do i need to nit-pick the fact that if Red Matter would turn a planet into a black hole from the core it could absolutely turn it into one from the surface, so the drill was unneccessary (Star Trek 2009)

OR... that was a pretty sweet action sequence jettisoning out onto the drill, the audio was spot on, a red shirt died, and overall a good portion of the story.

Choosing to let things go in the name of fiction and "turning off your brain" don't read as the same to me.

I'm able to keep my brain on and enjoy fantasy.
