Hi. I just photographed a model and paid her for the shoot in Washington D.C. I'm pleased with the photos and would like to do something for the model. I do not have a phone number or address. The shoot was 3.5 hours long and she was so much fun to work with. How do I tip or reward her?

How did you find her the first time? Start there to try and reach her. In the future tip right after the shoot if you are going to so that you don't miss the opportunity.

This sounds like an excellent idea. Both of you would benefit from this.

Can I review a model on Model Mayhem?  I didn't have enough cash on me at the time to tip in person. I didn't plan to tip. I will next time. Gift card?

Excellent idea. Either pick a place you know she likes or get a general one like the American Express prepaid card and she can go anywhere she likes.

Hey now, don't you go starting some "Fad" where the "in thing" is tipping models, because if any of my models catch wind of this they'll start asking me for tips after every job and I'm broke enough as it is. tongue

Cash. Like a good waiter. I've been tipped. It was a very nice gesture. I don't go to applebees with frequency, so best to veer away from gift cards IMO. Honestly, this is a case where less personal is positive

No keep it professional..  Up their rate if you feel they are doing an exceptional job...

I'd suggest, as above, hire her again for a greater sum.  If you have another idea of what you'd like to try, go for it.

It  sounds like you both enjoyed the shoot. These things are rarely one-sided.

I did a shoot that was initially agreed as a TFP shoot.  But after seeing the quality of the work and their professional attitude, I  paid them as well.

Pm her with a thank you note.  Hire her again & tip her next time.  Also credit her on the images you choose to post.  Crediting is a good way to show that you value the work the model does, and it helps her get more paid work when people view your port and click on the link to her port.

Why is this information not on the model release you had her sign or not on the photo when you shot her ID?

Is she on MM?

If so give her Credits in your Credits section.
Something like:
SoandSo Model MM# 5555555555
Great to work with!

Get her more paying work and she will be happy.

Agree.  Hire them a second or even third time.  Much like going to a restaurant: If you like the food you go back.  If not, then you don't.  Paying more for the food on the second trip is sort of pointless.  Just giving them repeat business makes the point.

You could offer them gas money as an alternate if it was a drive to the location too.

Gift cards may not work in the locale they are from, and could prove pointless and go unused as well.  I've got a few myself that have that "locality" issue and just sit.

This is also a good idea. Every model I've listed in my Credits section is someone I'll shoot with again; I would recommend any of them as being hard workers, willing to take direction and perform as needed to get the shot.

Strange as it may sound I have had more than one model tell me no when I tried to give them more than we agreed upon before the shoot. Some have taken the extra graciously and said thank you so much. If I think a model was better than I had thought in the first place I will just hand them more money than we agreed too. Like I said though a few have counted it and said no that's not fair and refused to take it.
I think generally speaking though most will and you can always talk them up to all your photographer friends.
Posting good shots of them on MM with credit is always a good idea too.

I have never thought of it as a tip but if I find a model that works well and is easy and fun to shoot with I will usually give her more than her negotiated rate. Most of my models have travel expenses and I will give her something extra for that.

If you don't have a phone number or an address, that seems kind of odd.

I presume then that you did not get a signed release from the model?  No record keeping?

As a matter of practice, it would probably be good to add that information into your records, and if you were to do so and make it part of your habit, you would have that information.

Now, as for tipping, probably best to do at the time, not after the fact.

You could, however, send a thank you card and make it known to others that you had such a positive experience and were quite happy.

As others also suggested, hire the person again, and you could surprise them by paying a little extra.

In the future though, always get a phone number, and then get identification and/or a release with things like address, just as a matter of good practice and having in writing that the person is granting you to use the photos (rather than as many people do, reply on an implied release), because if you did get that info for everyone you work with, you'd now have it.

I have been tipped cash several times at the shoot and a model mailed me a $50 gift card once.  I was thankful wether it was cash or a gift card is a gift so whatever they want to give me I am ok with it..

I think tipping photographers is a great idea.

Anyway, when I hire a model at professional rates, first-rate results are an expectation, not a surprise, and I would not think that a tip would be expected of me.  I mean, do people tip their doctors?

Not to mention, you can use Visa/Mastercard type gift cards to buy Amazon gift cards... which works well if those other gift cards have odd balances... you can use them to buy an Amazon e-gift card for the remaining value, then apply that e-gift-card to your account.

Damn it!! I think I just mentioned it.  sad

last wedding shoot, the father of the bride was paying me and asked if I was sure that was enough....I said...well, my assistant wouldn't mind a tip...he tipped her 50...so....why not tip photographers also when they do a good job?

Say you have a visa gift card that you used somewhere, and it has $5.75 on it, and if you don't use it, you lose it.

Just go to Amazon and buy an Amazon e-gift card for the remaining balance on the visa gift card.  You can buy an Amazon e-gift card for any amount, and then apply multiple cards to your amazon acct, while getting rid of that collection of small balance visa gift cards.

Back to the OP --- tips are nice, but best at the time of the engagement, or possibly including something with a thank you card.   Referrals are greatly appreciated, and if a paid shoot where a photographer may not have planned to share a photo, if they turn out really well, that might be appreciated as well.    However, all those are tough to do without getting an address at or before the shoot.

Now what can I do with a one year old Roots gift card?

Never mind the three Ritz cards that had to be used for different items under different circumstances.

On a serious note:  I always get the model's contact info even if she doesn't sign a full commercial release.

You could give her/him extra and say it is for parking/tolls/whatever travel expense. But the best tip is hire her/him again and recommend her/him to other photographers. It's the gift that keeps on giving.

even better than hiring her again - recommend her to other photographers in the area, so they hire her, too.

having one client is nice, but having 10 or 100 is even better... so send business her way.

Like others have said, the best tip is repeat business and word of mouth referrals.

As for reviewing models, there is no place on the site just for reviews (you couldn't say anything negative about a some other model that deserved it anyway).

You can say some nice things about her when you list her in the credits on your profile and, not mentioned previously, leave her a nice tag so that other potential clients will see it when they are viewing her profile.

EDIT:  I just looked at your port.  To add model credits (or MUA, etc. when you use them), go to "My Stuff", "Manage Photos", then on each photo, click on "Edit Photo" and type in the models MM # so that people can see who the model is when looking at your photos.

No, but you can leave a nice tag discussing what a good job they did, how professional they were to wok with, etc.   Positive tags like this can help when others are deciding whether to hire someone or not.
