Retouching tutorial: Hair masking

When you’re adding a new background to a photo, masking your subject’’s hair can feel a bit daunting. In this video, though, I’ll walk you through the entire process, and point out everything you need to know about this seemingly complicated task. First off, prior to starting this tutorial, make sure your photo is of the highest quality possible, and that you have a new background picked out and saved as a separate layer.

You’re welcome Dave and thank you for watching and taking the time to comment, I appreciate it.
Hair masking can be complex but hopefully this will help ease the way! Patience is key with this kind of work, just last week I spent 2 days creating one hair mask!

Hi Alex and thank you for the positive comments! 🙂 Always good to hear when someone finds a tutorial useful… There are of course other methods that would work equally well but in such a limited amount of time it’s not possible to show everything… masking can be a pretty complex business sometimes, so much so that I began a series on masking techniques some time back, perhaps it’s time to finish it off and share it!
