I already have 3 e-mails in my inbox that are obvious scams. I look for serious grammatical errors first: misspelled simple words, spacing or lack thereof, weak English/illiteracy, poor or unnecessary capitalization/punctuation over and over. Key indicators! Those who failed English all throughout school, probably won't notice. Second: Money...large amounts of it being offered to you and you're sitting there thinking "this is too good to be true". Ding ding! Guess what? You're right! If you decide to go with it, the scammer will then ask for your name, address, home phone number, and sometimes your SSN. RED ALERT! No real agency or photographer should be asking you for your SSN through e-mail for any reason! Then comes the all-famous cashier's check. The scammer tells you that he will send it to you but you need to wire it through your bank account. RED ALERT! The cashier's check is always FAKE! If you deposit the check in your account, it will not clear! As a result, the bank will hold you responsible and/or press criminal charges leaving you looking at a huge fine and/or a few years in prison. I have read about these scams time and time again before I jumped into modeling. Plus, I saw "To Catch an ID Thief" on Dateline NBC. I know about these things all too well!

I received an email that sounded totally legit, non of the usual scam signs, then the guy wouldn't give me any references, only referred me to a bogus looking site with the same photos in his port. Or actually, he asked if i wanted model or industry references, and then dropped off the face of the earth. Needless to say, we aren't working together.

Other Scams: Country First I'll respect you We are having a wedding in Oklahoma and a friend gave us your name. We cannot win this election without your support (read without your money) All the money goes to the local Girl Scouts (cookie sales) 70% off sale. (Just how bad were you being ripped off if a store can have a 70% sale and be profitable). The list goes on. Scams are pretty easy to spot if you just think about em.

The thing that always amazes me is how the scammers almost always out themselves by including lots of misspelled words and poor grammar!

TXPhotog wrote: Sure as hell, somebody will post another scam email later today, with a different name or a slight variation in the wording, either to ask all wide-eyed and innocent if it's a scam, or to "warn us about the new scam". yeah I noticed that about alot of threads, someone posted one about doing charity work and then less then 24 hours later someone else did the same just worded it different. I see that ALOT in threads, someone will post something and sure enough before the day is over there will be another thread about the same topic. I guess they need to draw the attention to themselves, funny thing is most who start them have already posted a comment in the original thread. I think the mods need to crack down on this, it is one thing if someone post a thread on a topic that has not been posted in awhile, it is another to post a thread on a topic that was posted less than 24 hours prior. Of course leave our "escort" threads alone, got to love them LOL. edit: you know they will repeat your thread, bound to happen, I am looking for it LOL....... Good info here BTW and sure it is helpful to the newbies.

People on MM who want to contact you will PM you, and you can then give them your email. Having it on your profile makes it searchable, and means that scammers and spammers can find it, load it into their databases, and then scam/spam away. So, I repeat: TAKE YOUR EMAIL OFF YOUR PROFILE!!!
