Replaced mine as the current one is more clean and focused than my previous avatar. Also, the model was a first-time nude shooter and her ease before the camera surprised me

While the makeup is stunning, this is beautifully lit! Really great shot, and eye-catching as an avatar.

Thanks... brought a 1200 watt-second 5 head Speedotron system to this event for lighting with 2 hours of setup time... JUST KIDDING... it's actually the 'on site' daylight balanced makeup lights... one bank of lights on each side of the model... wink

because, it's relevant, a decent shot and I've had a series of disappointments lately in regards to any new work!  :p

Bummer... well all I can say is 'keep shooting'... try new lenses... different locations and models... a newer camera.  Upgrades of all types usually produce better results.  My more recent stuff is actually blowing away my older stuff... primarily from some new lens choices and different lighting techniques.

That's the problem, Model (and I use the term very loosely) reliability. Getting to shoot has become a challenge in itself.

Thanks... honestly have to confess that the 'uptick' is due to these 4 things:

1.  Bought some new Nikon gear... D810... D500... a few new lenses... a few new lights and reflectors.

2.  Stunning locations and amazing models available on 'Cruiseboat Photoshoots' over the past several years.

3.  Great new 'home 20' location to shoot at (Waterworld), as well as new spots to shoot at in Mt. Baldy and Laguna Beach.

4.  Great subjects to shoot at more local conventions and events like ComicCon and WonderCon.

That's unfortunate.  Do you have anyone in your area that organizes group shoot events?  If so, guarenteed models there with zero reliability issues.  It may cause you a few dollars to attend, but everyone's time is worth money... and you could have easily invested 100s of dollars (time off work, gas expenses, location costs, etc) in booking models that never showed up.  Something to think about... wink

I think we've all been there at some stage. However, if the new avatar is a result of coming back from a downturn, you've come back nicely indeed. Well done.

True... and the most important lesson to be learned from this is... DON'T allow it to continuously happen... resulting in even more time and money lost.  Sadly, FP's response indicates that it's a re-occuring thing... hmm

I chose this one because I wanted to inspire women. I am a mom of four, raised a fifth, and I'm a grandma.

Mine is model Catra, with make up by Jewellz shot during a themed group shoot event I arranged at Wonderland Studios O.C.  It was a great shoot an d I love Catra's look...
I want MUAs and Hair Stylists ( not just models ) to know I cna shoot their work for for them FREE if they set up a shoot with me - so I picked an eye catching beauty shot for an avatar for that reason.

FYI my last Avatar was this shot - both feature a great model, with a strong look to the viewer

Awwww thanks... welllllllll... as much as I'd like to take 100% credit for all the amazing models... fantastic lighting... sweet locations... I can't.  I've been hosting group photoshoot events for well over 20 years (hense the 500 images in my port).  Some real mega-talent photographers have showed up to Select Models events with models they've invited (many are real superstars that are knockdown beautiful).   These models end up working with dozens of photographers at the shoot (including myself).  These photographers bring great lighting systems and expensive reflectors (that they sometimes share with me and others).  I'll take alittle credit on scouting some great shooting locations... but I stole a few of those ideas also... from other photoshoot promotors in SoCal... all except the cruiseboat photoshoots... which I started after my Mom took me on a Carnival cruise 14 years ago... and I said HEY... I've got an idea... lol

Over the past 2 decades I've been taking recommendations from photographers on cameras to buy... lenses to purchase... lighting equipment and reflectors to utilize... posing recommendations... and just how to work with models in general.   Twenty plus years ago when all this started... I SUCKED as a portrait photographer and I knew it... but all the photographers I invited didn't.  The results in my port reflect what I've learned over the post 20+ years from all these guys... and I gotta give them mega-kudos on the photographic progression I've made.  I picked up the ball... started dribbling with it... and the 500 images in my portfolio are the result.  I only actually shoot about 20% of the time during an SM photoshoot... and the images the attending photographers shoot at these events almost always blows mine away.   It's kinda like what's gonna happen at the June 24th forest event and the Nov 10 cruiseboat photoshoot... wink
