I have been asked a lot lately if I would be willing/interested in teaching some of the tricks of the trade I know to the MUAs and people I have been working with.  None of the more elaborate things I know how to do or anything realy involved but something more like 'light hair', products that should be in every light hair kit, things I never leave home without, how to keep a flat iron from ironing a funky line in hair how to make it curl... you know simple stuff. smile  Ok simple for me not so simple for others obviously, more to the point say people have asked me and I'm curious how something like this could be done, say perhaps a demonstration day or something so you guys see how it's done and get to try it out afterwards.  Any suggestions or recommendations or any more people who would like to know some of this stuff who are willing to wanting to get together?  I know this likely should have wound up in events, which it will if it does happen but since it's in the inquiry stage I want opinions on it more than attendees tongue

If we lived closer, I would totally have already asked you for lessons. wink
Don't know how it would be done exactly (logistically speaking) but I imagine something like a Powder Group seminar would be awesome.  (Demonstration by instructor then time to practice on models or each other while getting feedback from the instructor.)

I don't know what the legal issues might be either, as hair stuff seems to be more tightly regulated than makeup application.

Yeah I was thinking something along those legal type lines myself, like if I teach you something and you screw it up do I become liable?  I honestly wouldn't get into anything that couldn't be washed away so the liabilty factor would be minimal.  I have no intentions on teaching an ISO perm course or a fusions course but just something simple you guys could do if you get into a bind without a hairstylist present.  I have 0 intentions of teaching bridal stuff so don't ask tongue and no I won't teach you guys how to finger wave, that will cost you lol but after fixing so many of these 1/2 assed attempts of MUA's trying to make a pony tail with bobby pins and elastics and trying to hide it or the pins with little success I gave them a crash course in how to do it right and showed them why it's done this way and not that way and they all seemed to nail it rather quickly, turns out they got a 3 week crash course in school where months of hairstyling was thrown at them and they were sent off to practice sad   So you think it's possible for something like that to happen?  And with the proper motivation I could be persuaded to come teach you something but there will be payment involved and oh yes we will be going to Bloomingdale's when I come down oh yes we will tongue
But then, it was brought up to me do I do this from the kindness of my heart or should I charge a door fee like at a keg party lol?

Definitely charge.  Don't be silly girl.

You don't have to charge an arm and a leg but a finger or two would do.  You need to cover your own expenses as well as your time and effort.

For me, the reason I never took a hairstyling course, say at MUD or wherever, is a combination of not having the time to invest in a 3 week course nor having the money to throw at it.  Oh, and laziness is definitely a factor as well.  For me, I think what would have the most appeal is a short course (one full day, or maybe a full weekend) with small groups, models to work on, and lots of one-on-one attention from the instructor.

Things I would want to learn:
1) how to do a proper blow-out (mine always frizz up)
2) using a straigtening iron, evaluating temp. as well as hair texture
3) using a curling iron... how to achieve this type of curl, that type of curl, and if you just want body.
4) using a roller set.  I was shown how to do a roller set once by a mua I assisted and because I can't seem to use a curling iron without crimping the hair, I always resort to this... however I only know one way to use it.
5) Ponytails and easy up-styles, hiding pins and elastics
6)  Backcombing!  How to do it, when to do it, and how to get it out at the end of the day.
7) Overview of products.  Not necessarily brands, but types of products (this is shine spray and it's used for...shine.  Don't use it in this situation or the results will suck)  Here's how you use dry shampoo.  This brush will smooth the hair, this comb is for detangling...etc.

I would be there with bells on if you were in DC.  Maybe do a video of the class if you do it and let us buy it.. That way the money is still coming in after the class..

Mo Money, Mo Money, Mo Money!!  - Sorry for the ancient "In Livin Color" replay... I'm sooo bored at work today I could cry and things like this just pour out of my mouth, I can't control it.. :-((

Yeah Cyn that's a good idea, I can tell you there's 99 ways to dry hair and for me based on textures it's easier to use one brush type for one and one for another etc. and remind me and I'll show you how to not crimp hair (and how to fix it if you do) with a curling iron smile
I can show you those rollers too since alot of times I know it is easier to achieve that look and set it for you then work on a model's make up and then take it down and work it afterwards.
As far as products go I can tell you too 95% of the time what works and what won't and the 100% of the time way to tell what you want to try.  Dry shampoo is pretty easy too but I'm having a bit of a time locating some here... it's like they never heard of such a thing in Canada and it's diconcerting.
As far as taping it goes, that's a good idea too and I wonder if I could get someone to do that for us.  Maybe what I'll do is try for a weekend in May where I can come down to NYC and we can have a 2 day workshop or something down there as well.

So besides Cyn's requests, is there anything else you guys would like to see in a workshop?
Would you prefer to bring a model, someone you felt ok and comfortable with?
Do you want to get a list of products/items to bring or would it be better to pay it in the cost?
Would a 2 day workshop be better or a 1 long day one?

I do like the idea of a smaller class/group so the attention and time to practice was more hands on, I think idealy that would be the best way to do it.

I can tell you I realy hadn't planned on making a bridal styling video tongue  and I can teach you tips and tricks or we can do a specific look but unless it's 2 days there's not a good way I could cram all that into it and still be sure you grasp it all sad

I like the idea of bring your own model, that way everyone is more comfy with their 'client' for the day and you guys get to see a large variety of how things work in different people's hair smile
I honestly would prefer to do it with your tools and your stuff so you guys get to know the product/tool relationship to work with what you have.  There are a few things tho (from Cyn's post) that I would have to be helpful and supply in with the cost because I can get a ridiculous discount on things and then you guys won't have to pay $9 for this tool it will be $3 smile  So there are somethings I would make sure you had just to save you the headache of trying to find and the cost of paying retail for them smile

Retail... ha ha ha ha.  Who pays retail?

I think a list of "what every makeup artist should have in their hair kit" would be awesome.  I have a pretty decent hair kit I purchased in a fit of "I'm going to teach myself hair", the problem is I don't know how to use half of it effectively.  It would be much more useful to me to learn how to use what I got.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking, since it seems a lot of you guys have stuff already and you'd realy just like to learn to use it properly/better/more efficent etc. I'm seeing this taking on a bit of a different twist and tailoring it to the smaller group's use of what they have already rather than a here's what so and so said you should have.
So how about this?  You guys compile a list of what you have (if you have) and I could make up a workshop of how to's for what you have, obviously supplying a list of fill in the gaps etc.
Then I could make a more specific workshop of this is what I want to be able to do and then I'd supply a list of what is needed in order to make that happen.
Sound good?  I mean assuming there's people to do it tongue  And I must say that me coming to NYC isn't that out of the question so Cyn don't feel left off or out, I realy think coming for the weekend and doing a workshop there is definately possible.

LMFAO Spoken like a true MUA... "what are you doing with my latex setting tool!?!? OMFG get that away from your hair you idiot that's an import SFX tool!!"

I can hear her now chillin' in the MUA trailer... "inoright did you see that talent grab my latex setting tools and try to dry her hair with it?" "seriously, people these days have no respect for our tools!" "agreed... I saw this guy the other night on t.v. using a brush I have in my kit trying to tell people it was for painting this tree effect with oil paints... I laughed so hard, people are clueless what these tools we use are actualy for..."

My "light hair kit", and I use the term loosely, consists of bobby pins, hair spray, a not so good flat iron, blow dryer and anti-frizz spray. Oh, and a couple of combs/brushes. It needs help. And then I'd need to know what to do with it all. I took a hair class a very long time ago, but nothing really stuck. I would just like a brush up on doing curls, straightening, pony tails, etc. Also using hot rollers. The last time I used them, the curls looked fab but they were crunchy to the touch. Oi. Haha.

Crunchy from a hot roller?  Perhaps you should teach me that trick tongue
Sian do you plan to go to the ABA this weekend?  It's at the MTCC sun. & mon.
If you're gonna be downtown we could maybe hook up and work something out.  I'm booked sat. night already on a shoot but I took sun. & mon. off for the "Disneyland of hairshows" as I was told so I am gonna be just kinda bumming about down the street from my house lol
Ok don't tell on me for goofing about my reg. clients think I am going to be off learning the next big things to make them even more beautiful or some such nonsense.

Honestly I forget the prices so I'll have to get back at you on that.  If you're working and since this not realy your gig I would say work, make the money and skip this show.  Anything cool I can pick up for you or tell you about anyway plus, I'll be all GWC while I'm there like a tourist anyway so I'll get pics tongue
Once I get the proper ticket prices tho (it's sitting at my station) I'll drop you a PM tomorrow sometime and pop my number in too that way you can just phone me if there's something you think you'd like me to pick up for you while I'm there.  Gonna keep an eye out for good deals at the cash and carry anyway for other people I know who can't quite attend.  It seems to me ticket prices are silly expensive for non industry types... made little sense but I think it detours the would-be eBay seller from getting the good deals on pro products/tools if they have to lay down a ridiculous ticket price just to walk in the door.

I think what I might do is since Cyn and those girls all pretty much want the same thing, I might go down and do one for them first.  See what we can work out about it and work it into everyone''s schedules and since it's a smaller group and they all 3 want the same things I could cook that workshop up fast.  Well that and I am going to track Chris Milone down and buy his new union butt a coffee before I have to get me some people so they can call his people to see if 6 months from now I could get a coffee with him!  That way when he's all more famous and winning like an Emmy or something he can say in his acceptance speech "and I just want to thank Angel and Cynthia for hasseling me on model mayhem and making me feel like a stalked man...
