In another thread someone mentioned bartering - so as not to hijack that thread, I'm starting a seperate one here. Face it, sometimes it's hard to pay the bills, no matter who you are. I would love to pay everyone I want to work with, and be paid by everyone who wants to work with me, but sometimes that's not always possible. I just can't financially afford TFP with everyone who wants it, and many models can't afford to pay cash. But what works out great is payment in the form of services! Most people I've come across (since I don't live in NY or LA) seem to have a day job, and so trading goods/services that I would otherwise have to spend money on is one possible alternative to cash. Some of the ways I've compensated models and MUAs aside from cash: custom Business/comp cards Clothes Collectible Toys Day spa services Gauranteed gallery exposure Guaranteed tear sheets Getting them paid gigs with someone else Headshots Prepaid gas cards prepaid phone cards Restaraunt Gift cards Some of the ways I've been compensated: Access to locations Beer Chiropractic/massage work Free film processing Free photocopy and/or printing services Free Hotel stays Frequent flier miles MUA services on other shoots Prepaid gas cards prepaid phone cards Restaraunt gift cards Website services The following website has some information about barter, especially in the UK.

I think those are all great ways to compensate each other. Do you ever regift the gift cards that you recieved from a model and give them to the next model? I'm a fan of the regift.

I would shoot in exchange for a pediatrician visit. Every time I take my son it costs $100s.

I'm a fan of the regift. I've never regifted from a barter arrangement yet - and this is the reason: it is so damn useful. Everytime I've agreed to barter, it has been for something I needed, wanted or could really use. On rare occassion the trade stretched my dollar further than if I had been paid in cash!

My guess is that there is a professional organization for doctors (AMA?) that would frown on this. But who knows? Now, you're thinking! I'm just trying to open people's eyes to the possibilities - we used to have knock-down-drag-outs back in the OMP days over TFP vs. "Paid" and who should be paid, and all kinds of nonsense.

Getting them printed out is DOUBLE awesome. Getting comp cards and tear sheets is like HEAVEN.

My dentist is an awesome photographer. His office is decorated with landscapes he has shot. I have since learned that lots of dentists are into photogrphy (weird).

Homemade cookies for the photographer make a nice gift for a TFP. Who doesnt love a batch of homemade cookies? Id totally do a shoot for the clothes used in the shoot though! The gift cards are a nice one too. But Im pretty sure most would still prefer the $50 you spent on a gift card in cash.

Sure, everyone would prefer getting paid in cash. The gift card example is not people who purchased gift cards, but rather got them as a perk of their job and traded them for a photoshoot. When I did work for a Latino Culture Festival, for example, they were brand new, had no money, but one of the restaraunts paid me in free meals - it was something they could give away that cost them very little, but was very valuable to me, as it saved me from cooking/cleaning, etc. for several days.

See the OP - it was one of the ways I've been paid. The model was a licensed massage therapist. If you are ever in this area, I will send you her info if you want to try to arrange a TFMassage.

People seem to want to tip toe around the 800 pound gorilla in the room. I do agree that as the economy tightens, more, not less barter will be done. I am open to studio cleaning, massages, photo shop work, car washes, etc... The main point is that models, photographers, MUA's & stylist have to find new ways to do business in what is and was the first global industry..MODELING/PHOTOGRAPHY. Oliver Cole
