I barter with models for clothing/lingerie.  They shoot wearing it, then they get to keep it after the shoot.  I also give then a CD with 10 of the final images for their port.  Seems to work pretty well for me, when I have the time!

If I'm not paying a model it often frees me up to buy some shoes, accessories or such. I will routinely offer these to the model. They love getting hot sexy shoes when they weren't expecting it. AND, I have really great taste.

let me clarify my earlier post. the photogs I see offering their "services" were clearly offering TFP just for them to get "practice" and so on, as far as trading for a remote starter, an iPod, and a few other things I'm looking for, sheeeeit I'm game smile

I recieved a weekend at a B & B (including a Murder Mystery) which I used as my wife's birthday gift in exchange for doing a family portait pkg. for someone that had installed a hardwood floor for the B & B.

Worked out great.

I absolutely love barter.

Slides of an artist's work in exchange for painting my house.
Shots for a restaurant in exchange for an awful lot of meals.
Portfolio sessions for model's use in exchange for artistic figure sessions for my use.
Head shots for on air radios personalities in exchange for on air publicity.
Shots of hotels for their PR in exchange for free rooms.

I could TF computer work.  I've been paid IT for 16 years!  I know it all from basic tech work to servers!  The main focus of my duties right now are supervising techs, and keeping my servers humming!  I have to know all the tech stuff too, and still do it all.

Anyone need their computer fixed?

I got a chuckle on that one.

I just found a local guy who is willing to trade me custom made pin-up, period, steam punk, goth and pretty much what else I'm interested in as far as clothing in exchange for modeling the clothes for him. We haven't worked together yet, but it seems really promising. I'm sure it could still fall through, but I'm pretty excited and he loves my look.

I'm game.

My Wife and I make custom cakes and cookies and I am a home brewer of meads, if anyone in central Texas or that will be traveling through has interest, feel free to get in touch to plan a shoot. I would be more than happy to trade yummy things for your time. Also, if you have an outfit that needs repair work, we have a seamstress on hand.

Looks like it's time for a "Yearly Bump" for this thread. (or more actually)

What gave it away?

Roger posting like number 2.

Side Note:
Tho' I do like this thread and the OP is pretty useful.
I pretty much love the barter system.. but on that note, I don't really like to give pictures unless I absolutely have to (meaning that what the model wants and she won't work with me unless she gets pictures.. only has happened once... and I wanted her look.. so, what can you do?)

Shot a wedding in exchange for car repairs.

Shot a kid portrait in exchange for her mom's massage services.

The young lady in my avatar was in a short film that I shot and directed. She did a great job on short notice. Since she just got signed to an agency, I offered to do some shots for her in exchange for her acting services.

Did some kid portraits in exchange for the mom's futon.

I almost bartered for a custom designed couch. Unfortunately, I had a wedding booked for the same day so I didn't get a chance to follow through. The designer had completed some fantastic pieces for restaurants and celebrities throughout LA.

Goods and services received in barter are considered taxable income at their fair market value.

Be sure to file a 1099-MISC for those trade shoots, people!  Uncle Sam wants his cut.    This really isn't a joke... I wish it was.  It's effectively unenforcable, but it IS the law.

Bumped due to recent interest in the topic. Seems like many more people are open to the idea of barter these days (probably in no small part due to the economy), it's not just the modeling world - it's been covered in a lot of publications. The Chicago Tribune did a story on it several months back: http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2011 … rant-money

be as creative in your dealmaking as you are in your work.

Aw crap. I thought OGR was back. Then I realized it was an older thread.

Sign of the emerging black market economy as our currency looses value due to more rounds of "quantitative easing".

I have been offering private yacht charters in trade for photos lately--no takers yet though. It seams that people have less time for leisure activities in a bad economy.   Bartering with necessities like food and clothing will probably become more prevalent.

I had a nude TF shoot last week with a model who was absolutely fantastic.

When I saw that her cell was on the fritz, I was very happy to give her my previous Iphone.

I would take you up on that if I lived in Washington.

Not to derail the conversation, but I wish more people understood that.  All too often it is thought to be a matter of "free" modeling for "free" prints.

I pay my models $2000 a day.  That happens to be exactly the same as my day rate. Since that's the case, it would be meaningless for either of us to pay the other.

Most often it's clothing: I'll buy - or if we've not worked together before, direct the model to buy and I reimburse her - any clothing I specifically want to shoot her in... she then gets to keep it... mostly it's underwear which has a limited shelf-life if you're crawling around studios...

I can also cook, drive, put up shelves, assemble IKEA furniture (it's a big deal for most men...lol) fix cars, make coffee, buy coffee, cake etc etc etc...

Most of this would be when I move to NYC but...

I would easily trade for:

-Photography Lessons from the other side of the lens that could help me be a better model
-MMVIP
-Good Makeup. Think super nice eye shadow pallete.
-Heels. Some great ones.
-Clothes
-Getting me published
-Getting me a paid gig
-Spa/salon services (Model Maintenance gets expensive...)
-Plane tickets
-Vacations
-A really good meal
-Help when my computer decides to go on the fritz (it ALWAYS does!)
-The ability to have a stress free shoot...meaning sometimes, I don't want to orchestrate everything...you find the wardrobe, hair stylist, MUA and location. You tell me when and where to show up.
-Undoubtedly will need a tutor in my Master's program (not sure which class yet but it's all health sciences)
-Show tickets (Broadway, off-Broadway, concerts, etc.)
-Help getting me signed to an agency that will work with my schedule...

Also open to other suggestions!
