But I love beauty and fashion  can you do this type of work without retouching. I know big names have people do the retouching for them but until I'm either rich or famous I guess I have to do it. I used to retouch but I feel I waste more time retouching than doing actual shoots and I want to spend more time shooting and less time in front of the computer.

I shot these today and I'm feeling to just put them up unretouched.

Any fashion photographers out there that don't like to retouch? I know how to do it I just don't like doing it.

I'm just so used to having to retouch everything I feel like if I put them up without doing anything to them like they might come across as unfinished to whoever views them or maybe it has just been drilled into my head that everything needs to be retouched lol and I'm going crazy.

I feel that much of the retouching that I see on MM is pointless.

I do agree that retouching is the worst.  However, while a low resolution picture on the web will look good, a high resolution photo of print size will show all the defects.  Scott Kelby has a great book on portrait retouching and provides a number of options from retouching for proofs, the web, all the way up to retouching for a magazine.  It's an excellent source and I use it after almost every shoot.

2nd. these are damn near ready to go. only thing *I* would do is to touch up the bottom right corner of her lipstick that's a little out of order and dips in a bit.

i enjoy it. it's a necessary skill for any photographer to have that wants to make a career of this.

as a graphic designer in a former life, i truly love the practice and getting to work with PS again. i don't have to as an average joe hobbyist, but i do enjoy the editing aspect as much as the shoot itself.

Of course I am not seeing these shots at full res but they don't look like they need much.

I don't like retouching that much but I have paid for retouching before and was disappointed when I discovered I could have done a better job. I know if I kicked it to a high end retouched that they would do a better job but I don't always have the budget.

It gets boring and you are right - you spend more time retouching than you do actually shooting.

OP -- These images aren't on the same level as the heavily retouched shots in your port.

I think what you need to examine, is WHO are you shooting/retouching for? If YOU like the images, why do you need the approval of anyone else? Make yourself and the model/client happy, and let everyone else like what they like.

I'd rather just shoot.

I spend about 3x as much time selecting the photos to retouch as I do shooting - and an average of three hours per photo retouching.

If I could just afford to pay to have everything retouched, I could spend 3-4x as much time shooting as I do.

I just wish I knew how to retouch, then I could hate it with you. I am trying to learn more about photography right now, I haven't even started with editing.

Anything I do ends up looking like a child with scissors, paste and a box of crayons.

I wish I could produce something straight out of the camera as the OPs photos.  Dang.  Awesome!

I'm not sure why someone has to spend a lot of time retouching a photo that looks great out of the camera. Many of my images only need 2-3 minutes of color correction, saturation adjustment, checking for minor blemishes topped off with a bit of sharpening. Often the color is ok as is. I load each image into Photoshop, take a look at it, do the minimum, sharpen it and save.

I like it when I can do it creatively but not so much when I'm just spending an inordinate amount of time correcting the models flaws.    I also feel a little more pressured these days to amp up the retouching to that smooth skin look" that many alt photographers are doing.   For my mainstream fashion lately, I've been going for a "less retouched and more natural" look to some of the photos.

One thing that have helped me immensely is being more selective about the models I shoot.  I try to choose those with better complexions and weed out those that are a going to be a nightmare in post

Now, if only I could solve the problem of models bugging me every day for the images, lol

I was lucky to have a friend who likes retouching and has a degree in graphic design. He retouched for his own port for free most the time. Unfortunately now he's in the Navy on a sub somewhere. /sadpanda

Sometimes I don't do shoots for me because I'm just thinking damn but I'm going to have to retouch this stuff and even though I might have the free time to do the shoot I know I won't have the free time to do the postwork.

I don't hate it but I don't enjoy it either!...I delete lots as I shoot so that saves lots of time.  I try to just do the blemishes and any mismatch skin tones. Other than that I keep it very limited. I suck at it so I pretty much have to take the minimalist approach! lol.....

You can retouch mine then wink

I have a big backload of retouching to do, and I hate it because I'm looking forward to publishing the clients and my work, I hate all my old stuff!

I'm thinking, well actually in the process, of changing my rates to account for a retoucher to save my time and I can spend that time more on networking and finding more jobs. I think it'll be acceptable the higher rate as the work standard will be higher anyways for my own work. Maybe that's something you could do Angela? I guess that doesn't fix personal work though with no budget.

The weird thing is I love editing videos, once I find the right music, I don't have the patience, or skills, for stills though.

There are lots of times when I've thought "if I only fixed that hair when taking the shot" :-P

There's too much to fix in the OP's post w/o causing a lot of skin damage if you expect to print the photos, but if you edit for screen resolution, it'll probably be ok.  Try asking the model if she ever expects to print them.  If not, edit for iPad resolution to cut your work down....doing cleanup at 100% is a PITA, but if it's only at 25%, it's a lot easier :-)

When shooting beauty shots, I love to zoom in on an image with Capture One during the shoot to make sure there are no eye lash hairs out of place or issues with the lip stick. Sure I can fix it all afterwards, but the less I do later, the easier it makes it.

Sometimes you will take a brilliant image and just know the potential it has for an natural looking edit and be really excited to head back to the office and edit it afterwards.

Fashion- Yes, absolutely. Fashion is open to a HUGE range of interpretation and there's room for all kinds of looks. Paolo Roversi pretty much built his career shooting 8x10 Polaroids.

Beauty- Not so much. Yes you can do some with minimal amounts but it still a niche that gets highly idealized and therefor usually needs a fair bit of polish.

You are not alone! I have thought the same thing many times myself. It has made me much more meticulous when shooting beauty, as a result. I think I'm starting to get anal! haha.

Getting it right before you shoot makes it so much easier in post. There are no words.

Retouching other peoples photo is a lot easier, they know what they want and you just do it....... With your photos, you had an idea when you were shooting but it changes when you start editing/retouching.... The mood you are in and the new eyes looking at the photos make a huge impact on the final images, it's so annoying. hmm

Don't let that stop you. One of these days you'll be bored and you'll go back to see what you've shot and you'll get a bug up your butt about a pic and retouch it and love it.

I haven't processed an image for myself in almost 2 years, but I keep shooting them. I process the crew's and talent's selects, but I never bother doing my own. Eventually I'll get around to it and will have a huge portfolio update of all the stuff i've shot in the last 2 years.

Shoot to shoot, and retouch when you feel like it.
