A doctor. The highschool guidance counsellor told me our school wasn't equipped to release kids who could be intelligent enough to interest the unis in us, and that i should settle for a mining job instead. I think i dropped out around grade 10 before going into EMS instead as a student at 17-18. Went back and caught up two years in 6 moths and discovered photo by a chance in 08' or 09'

I always wanted to be a photographer. Put that aside to do other careers- customer service, dispatch, etc. then decided to go for photography and stop dawdling around. Glad I did big_smile

I definitely remember I wanted to be a flying super hero who only wore underwear.  And an astronaught.  But then, in 1976, I got a computer, and I think that tainted my entire life since then.

I too wanted to be a writer--a fantasy novelist more precisely.

That didn't happen, but I do have 60,000+ posts on MM.

When I was little (before I hit twelve) I wanted to be either an archaeologist or to have my own bakery.

Later on, in my teens and twenties, I was completely fascinated with forensic science.  Couldn't get enough of stuff like that, but nothing came of it.

Oh yes!  I asked a Park Ranger in Yellowstone one time how much he had to pay to work there.

The first job I ever wanted was to be an explorer. I wanted to travel uncharted territories. After that I wanted to be an archaeologist. Both of these inspirations were heavily influenced by my childhood hero....Indiana Jones. I imagined I could travel the world looking for treasure and kicking ass while I was at it. Seemed like a very real possibility at the time.

When I was old enough to make realistic life choices I toyed with architecture, engineering, and marketing.

Had I not ended up in photography I probably would have gone into marketing.

Yes, a lovely thought.
Think about it. 35-40 yrs. old. Great physical condition. 13-18 yrs. seniority with the park service, that's a nice fat oyster IMHO.

Spend the summer on Isle Royale? Sure!
Spend the winter on Isle Royale? Double sure.

Btw, you're going to Sequoia and Kings Canyon for the next 3 yrs. after that.

Paleontologist, hermit, park ranger, clergyman, professional athlete.

Got to be none of those things. Not even close.

I actually thought I would be a baseball player, that I was undrafted and not recruited to play college ball made me
think that the scouts were just busy.

I wanted to be a photographer, so hopefully there is still time to make that happen.

I also wanted to be an astronaut and a jet fighter pilot, but I'm starting to think those are not going to happen for me in this lifetime.

Ha ha....I love the Indiana Jones movies too. But also my heroes were and, remain people like,Captain Scott, Captain Cook, Benedict Allen, Sir Ranulph Fiennes, etc.

I haven't done any uncharted territories but certainly been where few westerners have trod....eg the interior of Greenland 600 miles from the nearest Inuit village, Borneo jungles, Cambodia and Laos, various glaciers and deserts etc.

Looking a bit Indiana Jones here ha ha at one location used for the movies at Ait Benhaddou

So living my dream a bit! And certainly my research will help contribute to more accurate dating techniques re archaeology. So I guess sometimes it's cool to make 'unrealistic' life choices! Though it means sacrificing financial considerations and a settled family life, and it entails long hard study and dedicated academic work.

Well.... as a couple of others have said, I always wanted to be happy.  I think that's the goal of everyone.  What makes us miserable is trying to figure that will get us there.

But as far as professions, in High School, I was thinking that I'd be a doctor.  So I was pre-med in college until chem101 knocked me into liberal arts (can't be a doctor with a "C" in chemistry).  So, since I'd been doing stage acting since I was twelve, I decided to be an actor.  Got a degree in Theater and move to Los Angeles.

And... I ended up being a writer.  Which, unbeknownst to me, was the answer to my question of happy.

Sometimes it's not the target you're shooting at that counts.  It's where your arrow lands when you allow it to fly.

An astrophysicist.

I was fascinated with space and telescopes when I was little. Had we not been poor and I was able to look through a telescope my path might have changed. However, I'm happy going into the culinary world.

I think this topic has come up before, but I'll answer it again.

I remember very clearly, sitting in an English class in 10th grade about what I wanted to be when I grew up.  Clearly, at 15, English class is a good place to think about the rest of my life and plan it out.

Anyway, I narrowed it down to two things.  I either wanted to design automobiles or be a Playboy photographer.  Obviously, one of those was ridiculous, but I was 15.  Even at 15, I knew it was ridiculous, but those were the two things I could see myself doing forever and enjoy.

So I did well in school, and went to college for engineering.  But Computer Engineering was hard.  So was Mechanical Engineering.  I eventually got a degree in Industrial Engineering and the whole time, I played around with photography.  It was expensive then, though, with film and developing and the learning curve was so very slow.

Eventually, I got into digital and I learned and improved exponentially.  I had a few girlfriends that I shot and then a few friends of theirs.

There's a lot more to the story, but the end part is, I got laid off from the Engineering job and decided to just do what I wanted.  So now I'm basically one step down from a Playboy photographer, and have even shot many Playboy models, including last month's playmate.  And even got paid to do it.

So that utterly ridiculous career that I wanted when I was 15 is pretty much my reality now.  Weird how life works out sometimes.

of course, I didn't get married at 25 and I didn't have my two children at 28 and 30.  But hey.... Playboy models....
