This is how i do it: Part Deux
Ok so those that have been around a while know about my "This Is How I Do It" thread where i explained how i get the colors in my shots. For those not familiar with it, you can read about it here: https://www.modelmayhem.com/po.php?thread_id=184617 So I decided to do another one, this one on my "studio" work. But this time I'm going to do it more Q & A style. Here are the pics from the shoot in question: Here's a video (if you don't like rap music then watch it on mute): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yeVaYN25JVI And here's a shot of the light set up: As usual, I'm shooting with my super cam and super lights: Two 5000's two 10000's three 32" umbrellas and one set of barn doors. Ok, you got the formula, the ingredients, and the video, now ask away if you have questions and i'll answer to the best of my ability. Jul 20 08 10:11 pm Link what are you using the 2 yellow shop lights for?? color? Jul 20 08 10:14 pm Link mary duprie wrote: There's only one and it was for the video. I like my shots warm anyway so after color balancing, i felt it was doable. Jul 20 08 10:16 pm Link mary duprie wrote: Nailed my Q. I was wondering as well as I didn't see any gel on it to match the other lights. Jul 20 08 10:18 pm Link slave to the lens wrote: hhahahaahahahah Still working through the footage to find it. Jul 20 08 10:19 pm Link are you concerned at all about flare in your lens with your background lights coming toward your lens? do you ever flag? Jul 20 08 10:20 pm Link I still have one of my WL's. I noticed you're using soft umbrellas, how come you have them turned backwards? Jul 20 08 10:21 pm Link mary duprie wrote: At times. Though I am a fan of flare. I actually just had that conversation with a model three days ago. Something about flare's aesthetic I like. So unless I want precision control of the light or i'm trying to crush a black background i don't typically flag Jul 20 08 10:22 pm Link Angelus Complex wrote: When shooting in limited space shooting through rather than bouncing can allow you a bit more wiggle room. Jul 20 08 10:23 pm Link Gone Til Novus-ember wrote: I'm a try that with the satin doll shoots. Jul 20 08 10:24 pm Link yes, you have artistic flare, then you have image degradation.......you seem to like rich looking pics, so i would think the loss of contrast would be a concern if i shot like this my images seem to loss richness.......yours still seem rich.....are you retreiving in PS? Jul 20 08 10:26 pm Link mary duprie wrote: Nope. Actually, since this was shot for that models site, I shot it in jpeg, so pretty much what you see in terms of lighting and colors is what came out of the cam. Jul 20 08 10:28 pm Link Angelus Complex wrote: i don't understand this, they look correct to me.....am i missing something? backwards? Jul 20 08 10:28 pm Link mary duprie wrote: He means I was shooting through and not bouncing. Jul 20 08 10:29 pm Link Gone Til Novus-ember wrote: perhaps the camera mode your shooting in helps this? Jul 20 08 10:30 pm Link Gone Til Novus-ember wrote: it's my understanding that they are shoot thru umbrellas, not bounce types, as in opaque Jul 20 08 10:32 pm Link mary duprie wrote: The fact that the WL's are older units that aren't rated that high has something to do with that. The intensity of the light isn't as much as you might think. Setting the backlight at 1/3 power is just right for that space. Jul 20 08 10:32 pm Link mary duprie wrote: this is true, but as I understood it he was asking why i wasn't bouncing. Jul 20 08 10:34 pm Link mary duprie wrote: Also, for the info of this thread, i always shoot manual, typically shoot sharpness +1, contrast=normal, saturation +1, vivid, fine jpeg or RAW+jpeg Jul 20 08 10:39 pm Link Damn I need to learn how to light. This is all over my head. Your image is awesome by the way. Jul 20 08 10:57 pm Link Eric David wrote: What part is over your head? Jul 20 08 10:58 pm Link As someone who has ever only once used a studio (almost a full year ago and under the heavy supervision of an elder photographer), I must ask, what is "flagging?" I really do want to learn studio, but I haven't the slightest idea what's going on here. Like, do the lights flash or are they just on constantly? How do you know how many lights you need and where to place them? How do you determine whether or not you need the umbrellas? What is that chair in the background for? Jul 20 08 11:01 pm Link Shon D Photography wrote: Flagging is blocking off light from flowing where you don't what it to flow. Normally with black poster board or foamcore or somethign like that. Jul 20 08 11:04 pm Link THanks for sharing. It's always cool to see behind the image. I just acquired my third (strobe) light an ABR800 and I am looking forward to playing with them. Jul 20 08 11:06 pm Link Shon D Photography wrote: Strobes flash when they are triggered. Either wirelessly by something like a pocket wizard or through a sync cord. The lights that you see on constantly are modeling lamps. They are little more than lamps that allow you to get a round about view your scene will look like when the strobes fire. Jul 20 08 11:11 pm Link Thanks! Jul 20 08 11:13 pm Link Rockwood is the man educates shoots and makes a damn good steak RHOTOGRAPHIC FOR PRESIDENT! Jul 20 08 11:23 pm Link I see the side lights, I see the nose shadow lower left so main is upper right... where is that barn door lower light lighting? Jul 20 08 11:28 pm Link I just wanted to say that I think this is such a great, helpful thread. I can appriciate it even though I'm not a photographer (because maybe one day I'll find it relevant; you know, when I upgrade from my Holga-shooting ). Thank you, Ransom! Jul 20 08 11:31 pm Link Carle Photography wrote: I might be wrong, but it looks like it's providing the focussed punch on the BG. The two rear shoot through umbrellas are essentially rimlights to POP her away from the BG, with the spill onto the BG providing fill. Am I close, R? Am I? Hmmmm? Jul 20 08 11:32 pm Link Carle Photography wrote: look at the set up pic. It's pointing directly at the background. Jul 20 08 11:32 pm Link slave to the lens wrote: And BINGO was his name oh. Jul 20 08 11:33 pm Link Got it, I was not sure... I keep thinking light spills more than it does... Jul 20 08 11:35 pm Link Gone Til Novus-ember wrote: Woo-Hoo! Jul 20 08 11:37 pm Link Carle Photography wrote: they do spill, BUT you'll note how close i have the umbrellas fitted into the lights. That focuses the spread better and provides a more controlled spill.
