I noticed you're using soft umbrellas, how come you have them turned backwards?

u can use umbrellas any which way as long as the subject is lit how u want. i often spin my umbrellas for different softness and amount.

Thank you Ransom!!  You have NO idea how much I've learned from reading through this thread!

I've done one two-light studio setup and and pretty much made it up as I went.  Reading this makes me want to learn more and try again.

Can't wait for the next lesson!!

Notice that you don't look through the camera.  Is that just a personal habit?  Do you do that for a specific reason or purpose?

If you have a decent video camera it would handle the light level from the modeling lamps and you wouldn't need to have a shop light screwing with your white balance. I shoot low level with my Panasonic 100A on 12db gain and get great results. If you're going to spend time and money making a video, do it with the same quality you seem to put into your still photography.

Also, according to the kid in Jerry Maguire, the human head weighs eight pounds.

What?  I thought we were all taking turns making irrelevant posts now.

I look at the EVF.

next lesson is on the 13th and 14th of September.   Workshop with me, Will Springfield and Bruce Talbot.  Only so much I'm willing to "give" away.  lol

Did you need three lights in order to create the photo you wanted or could you have used less lights or some reflectors and gotten a similar result?  And are the two lights in back more for the background?

Make sure you go back and read the WHOLE thread.  Your questions have all been answered.

thanks, i found it. missed it the first time through.  but still, could you have achieved that without the two lights back there with some other method or less lights?

It's possible to have done it with two lights and two reflectors.

Or two lights and one reflector (though increasingly more difficult)

Silly Ransom,

Just because I work a different way doesn't mean I can't appreciate how others do it completely different from me.

Just normal skin retouching and it took about twenty minutes per picture.

OMG. Thank you, thank you, thank you! This thread rocks so much. To summmarize what I personally learned:

I've got space in my living room to do some hot shots over the winter. If I can find a model who won't diss on my house too bad. wink
I can accomplish rim lighting with what I have, well.. I need one more umbrella but they're wayyyyy cheaper than the rest of the stuff I've been buying. wink

And thank you for proving that it's not how new the equipment is, but how you freaking use it! Wishing a workshop was in *my* future! Are you guys coming Anchorage? big_smile

second diana's idea of coming to anchorage, it's nice up here in the summer/fall, and we've got our state PFD checks to spend in a few months too.

Hey, just wanted to say thanks for the tips.  I shoot with the Alpha, and I bumped my sharpness up one notch, and set it to Vivid and I find the skintones to be much nicer.
