Your gonna sit here and tell me that Star Trek which has TV roots surpasses one of the most iconic movies that turned trilogy in the history of big screen cinema??

No.....fail on all levels.

I was thinking more in terms of well-known, epic multi-pieced works in film, but if you want to play the genre game...what exactly is so scientific about Star Trek or Star Wars?

Sci-fi genres require the piece to include scientific knowledge.  Simply traveling on adventures through space with neato gadgets isn't exactly what I'd consider to be scientific.

They're all fantasy to me.  And LOTR wins.

Try getting a kid to watch the early Star Trek TV episodes and/or movies, then try getting them to watch the original Star Wars trilogy.  Even after 30 years, Star Wars can still hold a kid's attention; and the costumes and ships still make them want to be part of it.  The Star Trek stuff is so dated, I just can't see them getting into it.  The latest Star Trek movie was good, but if we're talking originals, then I'd say Star Wars wins hands down.

The Seven Samurai, cause this is the story Lucas stole from.

OR

Wagon Train, cause this is what Roddenberry stole from.

Now of those two...The Seven Samurai.

damn. don't take much to go off topic. anyways, the newer Star Trek vs. the last series, story wise, Star Trek. Technology wise, Star Wars.

and here I thought that science fiction presented a hypothetical spin on science whereas fantasy had nothing to do with science

To me, they aren't even in the same category... Star Wars... hands down.

Stories like Frankenstein, The Time Machine, or much more recently, the movie Splice, are sci-fi.

Traveling through space, crazy gadgets, and weird aliens may *hint* at sci-fi, but do not define sci-fi.  There needs to be something else involved to separate it from fantasy.

Well , mankind has made it into outer space and many believe in alien beings

so that opens the door

and of course the internet is full of best science fiction movie lists that include both Star Wars and Star Trek

so I am hardly alone in my view on this

Forbidden Planet, for me.   Or Solaris.
Meaningful drama without 'splosions or bad guys.
Seen em both 4-5 times.

But for matinee fun, I love both Trek & Star Wars for the cool characters more than the stories.

Never could get into the Star Trek episodes on t.v. Especially the old ones. I cringed when that show came on. BUT, Uhura, she was worth suffering watching that show. The body on the women. Good lord, a treat to watch.

Star Wars, but I love movies so to compare a movie with a tv show, isn't really helping. Having said that, I did enjoyed Star Trek directed by JJ Abrams.
