Ok so those that have been around a while know about my "This Is How I Do It" thread where i explained how i get the colors in my shots.  For those not familiar with it, you can read about it here:

https://www.modelmayhem.com/po.php?thread_id=184617

So I decided to do another one, this one on my "studio" work.  But this time I'm going to do it more Q & A style.

Here are the pics from the shoot in question:

https://modelmayhm-1.vo.llnwd.net/d1/photos/080718/01/48802623574f7.jpg

Here's a video (if you don't like rap music then watch it on mute):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yeVaYN25JVI

And here's a shot of the light set up:

https://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q246/rhoceez/DSC09091.jpg

As usual, I'm shooting with my super cam and super lights:

Two 5000's two 10000's

three 32" umbrellas and one set of barn doors.

Ok, you got the formula, the ingredients, and the video, now ask away if you have questions and i'll answer to the best of my ability.

There's only one and it was for the video.  I like my shots warm anyway so after color balancing, i felt it was doable.

Nailed my Q. I was wondering as well as I didn't see any gel on it to match the other lights.

Very cool to post this, Ransom..thanks.

Where's the video of the hustle-to-the-door from the other day?

are you concerned at all about flare in your lens with your background lights coming toward your lens?

do you ever flag?

I still have one of my WL's.
I noticed you're using soft umbrellas, how come you have them turned backwards?

At times.  Though I am a fan of flare.  I actually just had that conversation with a model three days ago.  Something about flare's aesthetic I like.  So unless I want precision control of the light or i'm trying to crush a black background  i don't typically flag

When shooting in limited space shooting through rather than bouncing can allow you a bit more wiggle room.

yes, you have artistic flare, then you have image degradation.......you seem to like rich looking pics, so i would think the loss of contrast would be a concern

if i shot like this my images seem to loss richness.......yours still seem rich.....are you retreiving in PS?

Nope.  Actually, since this was shot for that models site, I shot it in jpeg, so pretty much what you see in terms of lighting and colors is what came out of the cam.

perhaps the camera mode your shooting in helps this?

the backlights seem awfully close to not lose detail/richness.......

your jpegs look great.....

The fact that the WL's are older units that aren't rated that high has something to do with that.  The intensity of the light isn't as much as you might think.  Setting the backlight at 1/3 power is just right for that space.

And thank you!

this is true, but as I understood it he was asking why i wasn't bouncing.

You can bounce shoot through (i KNOW you know this lol) you just lose a LOT of intensity.

Also, for the info of this thread, i always shoot manual,  typically shoot sharpness +1, contrast=normal,  saturation +1, vivid,  fine jpeg or RAW+jpeg

As someone who has ever only once used a studio (almost a full year ago and under the heavy supervision of an elder photographer), I must ask, what is "flagging?"

I really do want to learn studio, but I haven't the slightest idea what's going on here. Like, do the lights flash or are they just on constantly? How do you know how many lights you need and where to place them? How do you determine whether or not you need the umbrellas? What is that chair in the background for?

Flagging is blocking off light from flowing where you don't what it to flow.  Normally with black poster board or foamcore or somethign like that.

https://www.karluphotographic.com/images/Barn-Doors.jpg

Essentially that's what barn doors are.  They flag (to an extent) light from bleeding  up, down, left and right.

THanks for sharing.  It's always cool to see behind the image.  I just acquired my third (strobe) light an ABR800 and I am looking forward to playing with them.

Strobes flash when they are triggered.  Either wirelessly by something like a pocket wizard or through a sync cord.  The lights that you see on constantly are modeling lamps.  They are little more than lamps that allow you to get a round about view your scene will look like when the strobes fire.

You know how many lights you need for whatever look you are going for.

Want a shot where the model has a rim light on her left side, a hairlight on the head, full illumination of the body but want the face lighter than the rest of the body?  That's likely a 4 (could do it with three) light set up.  And you figure out where to place the lights by following one simple principle:

Light travels, for the most part, in a straight line.

Umbrellas, softboxes, ringlights, beauty dishes, etc, etc, are all modifiers of light.  You figure out when you need them based on the needs of the photo.  They diffuse, spread, focus and intensify the light as they have been built to do.  Find out what each one does and you'll find out when you might need each one.

and the chair was back there for Iyuana to lean on while Amber put sprinkles on her boobs.  I moved it before i shot.

I just wanted to say that I think this is such a great, helpful thread. smile I can appriciate it even though I'm not a photographer (because maybe one day I'll find it relevant; you know, when I upgrade from my Holga-shooting tongue). Thank you, Ransom!

I might be wrong, but it looks like it's providing the  focussed punch on the BG.  The two rear shoot through umbrellas are essentially rimlights to POP her away from the BG, with the spill onto the BG providing fill. Am I close, R? Am I? Hmmmm?

they do spill, BUT you'll note how close i have the umbrellas fitted into the lights.  That focuses the spread better and provides a more controlled spill.
