Model are always running threads about safety, and they need to be careful.   But what about photographers?

We have a ton of equipment, we could be harmed physically or face unwanted advances.

Any photographer stories?   I would love to hear from both male and female photographers.

Never felt unsafe with a model, I'm usually worrying about making sure they feel save and have their own space to work in without a fat sweaty photographer getting in their face.

Yeah.  I had a male llama pull a concealed firearm from the small of his back without warning once.  He didn't threaten me with it, but I certainly held REAL still until I was certain of that.

I haven't.  But most of the models I work with know another photographer or model I know.

Unsafe - no.

Uncomfortable, yes. This was back, about 1999/2000, I was shooting sets for a fairly popular website so each model would be about 6 sets, generally 50-75 shots per set. Sets would be from clothed to nude, nothing too explicit.

Model calls from an ad I had in a local nightclub type magazine (this was in Tampa - tons of those magazines around all the strip clubs). She sounds ok, has experience from what she says so we discuss the shoot content etc...

She shows up with her "driver" whom she introduces, he glances around and she tells him he can leave and she will call him when she is done. He walks out and closes the door behind him. She has on this long black dress, unzips it, and drops it on the floor. Sans any undergarments etc., I thought ok, well no unsightly panty or bra lines to to deal with. She opens the 3 or 4 bags she brought with her and begins to pull out her outfits etc., including whips, handcuffs, chains, toys... you name it she had it.

Keep in mind this was not supposed to be a bondage or hardcore type shoot at all. She then ask me to pick her first outfit, so I tell her which one would be fine (without saying anything about the "props" she brought). We move to the first room, each room was a different set for the shoot. We start shooting and I am maybe 30 shots in, to the point where she is now undressed, and she goes and grabs a toy. She starts to tell me how her dad used to do things to her when she was little. OK, now I am pretty uncomfortable and tell her that we do not need the toys for the shoot. Next thing she says, "you can &%*$ me if you want".

I gave her some cash (to avoid any incident) and told her to call her driver, that I didn't think the shoot was going to work out. She called him, packed up and was on her way.

Had my very first shoot with a model on Monday. Right before she was to arrive she sent me a text about her Ex showing up and that there was a restraining order etc. She did come to my house to shoot a bit later after the police resolved the issue

My wife was a bit concerned her Ex was going to follow her to our house since he did not seem to honor the restraining order.

Up front before all this I made sure the model was bringing an escort and my wife was home. I wanted no chance of there being any kind of suggestion of any thing going on other than a photo shoot of a fully clothed person.

I did not necessarily feel unsafe but I was and am certainly introverted and insecure. :-)

Not physically.  But I've certainly felt awkward, and worried about what stories someone would make up, based on comments on set.

I think you figured it out the hard way but those Tampa "nightclub" magazines usually include ads for  personal models (i.e. Escorts). She thought your thing was photographing prior to getting down to business.

She was probably shocked you actually only wanted to take photographs.

Fortunately I did shoot many models from those ads that were quite popular on that site, and a few others. But this girl, well, she was just freakish lol

i booked one model from CL and she turned out to be a stripper which was fine but she was just fidgety and nervous and practically shaking during the shoot so it was kind of strange. i wasn't sure what was up with her. maybe she was just cold. on the plus side she was pretty and did her own nipple fluffs. it was one of our early shoots.

otherwise nothing to report in the unsafe category nor has any model ever surprised me by whipping out her toys or offering me something not listed on the menu.

Coked out model ... worried for my gear
Couple Runway shows ... sticky fingered models
Fashion walk ... again with the stick fingers
SPUN "escort/security" ... he was NUTS
Male model ... setup 2 different shoots IN PUBLIC, no show no call both times ... red flags galore from this dude ... makes me wonder if he was gonna jack me for my gear ...

is it true that many women who like to get naked for the camera were abused in childhood? i thought i read that somewhere once.

She has been the only one to ever tell me that and I have shot with hundreds of nude models over the last 23/24 years.

Not really -

but I have felt as though I might become un-safe with my housemate, if I were not pretty darn careful about keeping things "friendly" with a model or two lol

Some of you may be in the wrong business.  Try the post office, nothing bad ever happens there.

To answer your question... no, I have never been anything even remotely close to feeling unsafe at a shoot.

Yes, I had a llama once threatened herself with suicide and take anyone who was around with her in the same boat needless to say i called off the shoot rather quickly and told her to go find help..

After the threats I encountered as a photojournalist, the ones from models are relatively minor. There was the lady who said "I don't need an escort" and pulled a .38 out of her purse. For some reason, we never did any photos.

Threats from models' boyfriends/escorts/crazed "friends" have been far more of a problem. Especially when the models didn't mention they'd be disrobing.

Only once, on a preshoot meet in a coffee shop.

I mentioned that the primary purpose of the meet was to allow the model an opportunity to develop a comfort level with me.  She responded that she wasn't the least bit worried, that she always carried a switchblade with her to every shoot, then whipped it out and flipped it open to show me.

Somehow, we just never were able to match up our availabilities after that.

I wondered how long it would take for this to get posted.  As someone new to shooting models, security, rather than safety is a concern.

Shooting at home means you are allowing a complete stranger, sometimes accompanied by an "llama herder" into your home.  That is not a popular idea with the wife to begin with, and may end up shortening this phase of my photo hobby if she doesn't feel warm and fuzzy about the models who do come over.

My wife was the same at first,  but after a few shoots, meeting the girls, ganging up with them to pick on me (seems to be a natural female thing) she has no problem with them at all.

I never felt threatened when I am with a model. I feel threatened if there are escorts that the model brought.

Yeah, I don't allow escorts because of this. I need to feel safe, and the models don't think that is a concern. It is a concern when someone who has NOTHING to do with the shoot is able to do whatever around. I could need to run to the closet and they could pocket a spare lens I might not notice till hours later.

I've had other problems with escorts, not safety related. One flooded the bathroom by flushing a towel down the toilet. And another ruined a nice wood table. So after that, and the safety concern, I just don't allow escorts.

And when I tell a model that I don't allow escorts because I feel uncomfortable and unsafe, they don't get it.

Erm, this is a thread about feeling unsafe around models, not their escorts!

yeah i have one where we mutually decided that a "no hug" policy would be in our best interests.

sometimes i get these really big hugs from my paying customers (especially maternity). i guess they're just happy that i was able to make some nice images for them.

Never quite threatened.
But while I was at the school I set a shoot with a girl I knew from a few friends that have shot with her before, she was chill, open minded as well as just fun person.

But when she whipped out a bottle of whiskey and offered me some *I was underage* as some extra curricular drugs , this was all at my college photo studio while there was another set of students shooting on the other 2 set ups, I can honestly say I was a little uncomfortable.

Not again lol

after all I seem to have a shelf life of 2yrs or so, and I tend to require constant entertainment, lest I become bored smile

My current housemate is quite formidable, however,  and I am rather happy at home (5'11, size 2, recently former international model at a certain level....)

though temptations occasionally occur lol
