Guitars. caution tape. hand bra.  Who cares?  A great shot is a great shot.

There's nothing new under the sun.

Its not a great shot if its been seen a million times and they all look the same.  Thats called a lack of creativity.  I never understood the gas mask photos in the first place.  It looks stupid but then again, I'm not into fetish.

It's all in the lighting. Rubber gloves and turkey baster optional.

Exactly!

Besides I have seen a lot of gas masks which are works of art in their own right.  Now don't get me started on wedding dresses....

It's never been my thing, but I try not to judge...I'm sure lots of people fink the kink that gets me off to be stale and cliched too.

The only gas mask shot that I would even think about shooting woud be something like this.

Model sitting tied to a chair with gas mask on, the hose from the gas mask placed between the ass cheeks of a grossly over weight and hairy dude, who is eating from a gallon container of pork-n-beans.....

I would call it "Death of a Gas Mask Model"

Can we talk about what a gas mask wearing woman is all about?

Many concepts are cliche' and overdone, with the world-ending gas masks one of them.  But now, let me tell you about an upcoming concept of mine - now this one is totally new and has never been done before...

oh wait - I'll tell you afterwards...

Certainly!

From fetish to symbolic, I can imagine it means a lot of things to a lot of people.  Dehumanization, rubber or vinyl fetishes, breath play, etc, etc....

What's your take on what it's all about?

I think a lot of people employ the gasmask as a copycat motivation, a mere prop without consideration,  rather than really contemplating what they mean about utilizing a gas mask as part of their photographic composition.

I never really got it to begin with.  I kinda like seeing people's faces in photos.

But that's just me.

Every photographer should have at least 2 or 3 gas masks. They are very useful. They are great for emptying the kitty litter box. Beyond that, they are handy when the MUA cancels at the last minute....just slap one on the model and shoot away.

If you happen to find yourself working with a model for the first time and you discover that her "actual appearance" differs greatly from her "online beauty" (which comes from the fact that she's worked with some absolutely incredible photoshop experts), gas masks can be invaluable.

There has to be something about gas masks that attracts people's attention , otherwise there wouldn't be a thread about them every other day . Take any photograph here of a model , add a gas mask , and it will be viewed more than the original ...... why do you think that is ?

Well, I'm definitely tired of people telling us what we can & can't photograph, but I suspect that there's nothing we can do about that.

I mean, the marketplace / universe will educate us; we don't need know-it-all's sharing their unsolicited opinions.

i didn't like it when wynn bullock made it back in the 40s during wwii, and i haven't seen any others that i do like.  gas masks and girls somehow just don't mix for me.  let's try something else.

The problem with the girl-in-the-gasmask is that after the rest of us have suffocated to death, the girl-in-the-gasmask will not die!

I'm guessing D because they're everywhere in fashion magazines.

It depends.

Edward Weston entitled his series of Charis in a gas mask "Civil Defense". How a nude in desert sands wearing a gas mask represents that I don't know, but that's what he called it. The same for a nude sitting on a chair in a gas mask, and many others.

It doesn't matter how I feel about gas masks, or caution tape, toilet shoots, hand bras, this season's colours, next season's dresses, or anything else for that matter.  All I need to concern myself with is the work I'm doing.

You think the intent of many "alt" shooters on MM is in their depiction of a naked (or at least topless) women in a gas mask is to signify Civil Defense?

I'd always assumed it was a component of breathplay, but there are probably lots of motivations behind it.
