After all the bitching about Apple on the other thread, who are there to order their iPhne 6 right after mid-nite tonite.

I guess it will be me, 16GB iPhone 6 for $199.  My iPhone 4 is still relative new, so I hope I can get some money by selling on eBay.  So 4 years use for $200, it is not too bad.  I can live with it.

AT&T will grandfather me the unlimited data plan for $99 per month, or give up my unlimited data for 2GB data plan for $65.

I am not sure what to do. smile

Nope.  I'm still not tempted to get any smartphone.  If I was to take a long trip, I'm get a burner phone with good GPS, but I got no plans to travel.  So...

Out of curiosity -- what in the iPhone 6 is inspiring your upgrade?  Or why is your iPhone 4 not good enough anymore?

After several years of owning iPhones, beginning with the first one that came out, Apples newest announcement inspired me to go out and purchase a new phone.

A Samsung.

Y'see, practically every one of my phones got stolen, and I cracked the screen on my iPhone 5 twice.  I've got tons of really cool and useful apps on it, but in reality I've discovered that in all these years I actually use less than a dozen of 'em on a regular basis.  Most of the others are duplicates of other apps or just things that make you say "look what this phone can do"... and in reality nobody really gives a shit what my phone can do... including me.

I do load up the phone with photos.  I quickly learned that 16gb wasn't enough space for me and the iPhone5 was maxed out.  In order to get more memory, I'd have to buy a new phone.

There's absolutely nothing about the newest iPhones that intrigued me.  Yeah, the screens are bigger, bfd.  I like a phone to be small so I can easily carry it with me.

I'm tired of spending hundreds (and now the newest iPhones will cost nearly a grand) of dollars every year to replace a stolen or broken phone.  The Samsung Galaxy Light that I purchased is equivalent to an iPhone 4, and in some cases even better than an iPhone 5.  It allows me to add memory when I run out and it only costs a TOTAL of $99 (no contract or payment plans disguising it as a $99 phone that actually cost $500+) which means I can now afford to have 'em stolen or broken on a regular basis.

Don't get me wrong, I still really would prefer an iPhone, for NO OTHER REASON than I like the IOS better.... otherwise the rest is a draw.  Which reminds me that Apple seems to be over-hyping the new IOS8, making claims about how much time went into creating it, how much different it is, and how fantastic it is... when there really doesn't seem to be much different than the current IOS7.

... and I really think that apple 'Jumped the Shark' with the watch.  Sorry, they're not selling very well with the other brands that had 'em out for awhile, so I don't see it happening with Apple.

My biggest problem with my Plain iPhone 4 is only for 3G, too slow for me.  Reception is not the best (problem with their antenna).  Although I have Macbook and iPad, I tend not bring them with me when I travel less than a few days.  I can survive just with iPhone alone.  The new iPhone 6 also gives me the person hot spot where the Plain 4 could not.  My contract was long expired 2 years ago.

In short, I need 4G.  If I can keep iPhone 6 for 4 years like iPhone 4, I have no complain.  Unlike others, I don't to change my phone every two years.

In addition, I can't live without a smartphone like iPhone.  It has so many the navigational and marine Apps for off-shore sailing.  It is my back up system for the chart plotter installed on the boat.  Often when doing sailboat delivery, the boat chart plotter is an off name brand that I am not familiar with, I just rely on my iPhone if I have to.  The App is so good, that I can sail around the world without problem.  It scares the owner when I tell them I use iPhone to sail into the harbor at night.

To that point, there were music players before the iPod, there were tablets before the iPad, and we both know that the sales took off AFTER Apple entered the market with a product people wanted.

Will the Apple watch have the same success? I don't. But I'm guessing between maybe and probably...

Since they started putting non-removable batteries in iphones it pretty much ruins the idea of buying one of those versions used.

I'll probably order one soon, I want to hold it before deciding. I have a 4 with 32 GB, not using all of that. I'd rather have a smaller size.

I never thought of that. Apple can be so short sighted sometimes. How tough would it have been to make a case that opened, like everyone else?

iPhones have never had replaceable batteries and millions of people buy and sell used iPhones every year.

So they could sell you a new one when the battery wears out. I know. Same reason several of their computers over the years have not been upgradeable.

I currently have the 4s, and I'm not ready to jump to the 6. I'd rather go with the 5c or 5s. I'm waiting for the 6 to be released so the prices for the other iPhones will go down a bit.

I'm a tech geek, I use my iPhone for hours a day (GPS, eMail, billing, web, games). I upgrade every 2 years when the "plan" allows me a discounted phone - tomorrow is the upgrade day, I'll be ordering my new iPhone 6 (not the +, it's too big for me).

You'd buy a whole new computer/phone if only the battery was worn out? Why wouldn't you just replace the battery?

For me I'll probably buy a 5s eventually.  I have a 5 and I'm not interested in a phone with a screen bigger than 4".

The 6 would be too big for my tiny hands anyway, which would put me at a greater risk of dropping my phone and shattering the screen. lol My mom has a Samsung S3, and good god that phone's big and bulky. Do not like.

I still have a 13 (14??) year old iPod, an 8 year old iPod, and a first generation iPad I traded a friend who was upgrading his for a print. So, I know apple products tend to last :p

However I'm quite happy having the dumbest phone possible. I can make and receive calls, text (except sometimes people try to send me a video or gif and my phone gives me a "what the fuck is this shit? How do I proceed?" message). I can check emails on there if I have to.

I only have to charge my phone a few times a week, which is mighty useful when none of the power outlets on the bus are working or every asshat at the airport is plugging in to charging stations.

I was a smartphone hold out for as long as I could but, still resisted the iphone on principle of marketing hype.

I have a Samsung and a tablet....nice plan, use it as my internet service provider exclusively as well as the phone and tablet.

This is as far as I want to go for now but, man, those iphones are very, very well sold and tempting!

Check your data usage for the past 6 months. What was the average data per month? That should help you decide.

you do realize that at&t throttles back your data speeds on those plans. i believe 2 gigs is where they put the breaks on.

i have no idea how someone can use that much data a month. even if i use a generous amount of gps on my plan (which i rarely do), i have never come close to using even 1 gb of data per month. of course, i have wifi at home, and don't do any netflix, youtube, facebook, instagram, et al shit on my phone anyway.

just the usual suspects: actual phone calls (unlimited), texts (unlimited), email (small data footprint), general searches (again, small footprint).

I'm trying... but the store still says it's updating.

Why I'm upgrading from my 4S to a 6?
My eyes got old and I can't see as well as I did 3 years ago.  I'd really like something a little bigger.  Also, after 3 years, the battery has gone through about 1000 charge cycles.  While it still lasts about half a day with moderate use, rather than pay to have that battery replaced, I can sell it to someone for easily half what a new one will cost me.  Also, while I've always gotten the smallest storage phone, I'm choosing to get a 64GB one this time around.  I plan to use the camera on the phone a lot more, so that means a lot more photos and video to store.  ALSO... I even plan to use the iphone as a real video camera for insert shots in some of my productions.

So.  There's reasons.  Maybe not reasons that many people would consider good, but I don't care.  I'm also getting a new phone because I want one.  I have disposable income and I am a committee of one.

C'mon Apple store.  Update already!

find a couple buddies to go in on a plan. you can get four people to share 10 gigs of data, have unlimited talk and text for 160 a month. look at what i said about the at&t "unlimited" iphone data plans. they throttle you back after (i think) 2 gigs. do you really use that much data?

for me--personally--i make a shit ton of calls (and now texts, too). having those two components unlimited has kept me at at&t. my email  footprint is small. i get hundreds (more like thousands) of them a month, but they hardly make a dent in my data.

if there are any major attachments i need to download, i'll just do them when i get home, on my wifi.

2 MB?

My Daughters can burn 2 MB's in 14 days using Facebook, watching videos and downloading music, each!

2 GB, not 2 MB. my daughter burns through a ton of data as well. i have allotted her a slice to use. once she goes over, i shut her off of data for the remainder of the month. in the last two years, that was twice.

The iphone 6 has nothing that  Android didn't have in 2012.

Me? I'm still using my Motorola Razr flip phone. It works just fine, and it's tough as nails. I can drop it and it doesn't break, battery lasts for days, small and fits in my pocket and gets great reception in rural areas. Oh yeah, it has a replaceable battery too.

I also have a Nexus 7 tablet for the smart stuff, like emails.

Just order my iPhone 6.  Only thing that I changed is to 64 GB version.  Just an hundred dollars more getting 4x of memory.

The phone will be here on the 19th I was told.

I still have the unlimited data plan.  I don't believe the wireless carrier is willingly to risk a class lawsuit to slow down your phone.  We have too many lawyers and Consumer Protection Agency in each state watching them.

It's definitely a testament to Apple's genius in marketing to even hear a question like that.

Most of us buy replacement things when we need to, not the second new versions become available for purchase. Who runs out and replaces their GE dishwasher the second a new model is released?

Toaster ovens, cars, reading glasses, houses, watches, computers (other than Apple of course), printers, umbrellas, and so on. Most of us buy new ones when WE say we're ready to do so, not when the manufacturer says "ready, set...buy!".

Do current iPhone users have such monumental problems or complaints with their current versions that they absolutely  must get the newer one ASAP? Are the incremental upgrades (speed, memory, features, etc.) that are present with every new iteration of any product really that compelling that they justify someone shelling out a substantial amount of money the second they can?

It's an interesting phenomenon, and I can only assume that Apple's marketing strategy is the root cause for this behavior.
